Discussion: Pelosi On Her Own Leadership Prospects: ‘It’s The Least Important Question You Could Ask’

Agree with Pelosi here… No one who cares about the country should try to stir the pot by making “Pelosi as Speaker” a feature of this election cycle. I may not be a big fan… but “Pelosi as Speaker” certainly sounds a lot better than "Ryan, or McCarthy or any other (ᴙ) as speaker.

The Republicans are attempting to nationalize the election and in doing so have targeted Pelosi as the chief Democratic boogie woman. This Reporter’s question plays right into the Republican frame. Who asked the question? Or would asking it be bad form? NPR wouldn’t take sides in an election, would it?

I want to apologize for this comment. I have been viewing this election through the Donald Trump lens where all reporters have a hidden agenda, except I am pretty sure I think most reporters work for conservatives. If the boss wants a story you produce the story he wants.

Pelosi’s answer to the idiotic question is exactly why she’s the right person to lead the House Democratic Caucus.

The least important because she knows she’s on her way out.

As a good, liberal Democrat I am glad. Time for fresh horses and new blood.

I look forward to the day where reporters hound Republicans asking who they voted for in 2016. More than a few Democrats have lost elections because they voted for Obama or supported Pelosi. The same and worse should happen to those who enabled this administration.

nope.

No, it’s because it’s a stupid fucking question designed to sow division among Democrats and because it doesn’t matter unless or until Democrats take back the House. But she WILL be Speaker if that’s what she chooses to do. It’s up to her.

Ask her what shoes she’s wearing. That’s an important question to ask public women.

How come no one in the Media asks Republican Candidates if they’ll support Jordan for Speaker? Every time i turn around MSNBC is asking Democratic Candidates if they’ll support Pelosi, hell they did a whole round table this weekend on the subject but, never bring up Jordan.

How do you know this?

The question is important in furthering a GOP boogywoman meme about her. That journo was doing GOP dirty work with that question ( an MSM habit that’s sunk many Democrats ) and she handled it very well. The main objection to Nancy Pelosi is her effectiveness. She’s damn good shepherd of her party and should the Democrats manage to take control of the House she’s the last person the GOP wants in charge of them.

If Democrats want to get back in the game they need to deal with the media. Any question that stems from a GOP talking point should he handled just like Rep. Pelosi did here. If not they’ll succumb to the next “Al Gore said he invented the internet” scam.

Do this: take a look at how many GOP memes and rumors the MSM pushed. Try emails or Benghazi or “invented the internet”. Look at the dates the GOP talking points were pushed by the MSM. Bengazi was on A1 above the fold across the USA long after it was known to be of no fault of Clinton’s. No other embassy attack was blamed on the Sec. of State why HRC? Because the GOP wanted it so. I don’t know if bosses demand this. They probably don’t but the MSM’s addiction to selling news that pleases “both sides” has caused them to broadcast many known falsehoods about Democrats that originated as GOP talking points.

I’m all for the Dems having new, fresh leadership.

I’d support questioning Pelosi’s leadership in the House after I’ve had the chance to let Schumer’s stepping down sink in for about a year.

If Nancy becomes Majority Speaker (I have no strong opinion either way) I hope the Republicans have cause to call her Nancy Drew for all investigations she will oversee. None of this “looking forward” shit anymore.

Exactly my point. If there’s evidence out there that media owners and investors are mostly conservative, and demand that most stories benefit conservatives, lets’s see that evidence. Failing that, let’s see the media as a complex ecosystem that’s polluted in some ways, maladapted in others, but not somehow one single-minded organism with a devious agenda. That’s just throwing up your hands and saying “I can’t sort out all the moving pieces so I’ll just believe it’s a simple-to-understand conspiracy.” Folks here are too smart and sensible to be thinking such things.

The Media, just having been party to the Demonization of Hillary Clinton is all too eager to show its glorious power once more by demonizing Nancy Pelosi.

I remember when snot nosed Luke Russert, who like Chris Cuomo has his gig because of his last name/father rather than his own merits as a journalist, had the temerity to ask Nancy Pelosi if she should consider stepping down from Democratic House Leadership because of her age. Pelosi schooled Russert on how she had to defer her political career to be a housewife and mother, and was not going to be told when to retire or step down from her leadership position by the snot nosed, callow likes of Luke Russert. The GOP hates Pelosi because she got the ACA passed, notwithstanding the GOP and the Blue Dog/Max Baucus Democrats’ best laid plans to sabotage it.

I would actually love to know who the consensus alternative for Pelosi the pseudo progressives have in mind. But I am getting tired of Liberals playing into the GOP’s agenda, and this is just one other example. Register, formally join the Party, and pay your dues. Then you might have standing to demand someone step aside for “fresh blood.”

YOu conflate two different positions.

Speaker of the House is a Constitutional office.
Majority leader is not.

Oops. I guess I knew that. I was wistfully thinking of Democrats taking the majority this Fall. I just worked that word in there without thinking about it.

As bonvivant says, I have no strong feelings about Pelosi one way or the other, but I would hate to see the Dems fall for some more GOP mental jujitsu and tie themselves in a knot over her being the Speaker or not. Like she said (more or less) worry about that shit after the election.
