Discussion: Pelosi, House Dems Back Obama's Trade Agenda After Nearly Killing It

Agree, although the Dems might have moved the needle on the Highway bill, and it appears the Africa trade assistance bill and some other goodies might be included in the TAA…

Yes, he appears to be trolling.

Free trade means a level playing ground, right? So why is the postage to return a peace of faulty crap from China that I bought on ebay more than I paid, postage paid, for the item? A Chinese seller can pay the fees for ebay and shipping to the U.S. and still make a profit for less than an American can ship the item to China.

That means you can operate a world-wide retail mail-order company in China but you can’t compete with such a company from the U.S.

A large part of this might be Republicans sticking it to the U.S. Postal service by making them contribute more to retirement plans than any other entity in business or government.

But for small players who use the post office, there is no “free trade”, the market is fixed to favor the Chinese no matter how little American workers are paid. I suspect it will be the same for the new countries favored by the TPP.

Small businesses overwhelmingly support the TPP.

Good to know.
I understand the National Conference of Mayors – mostly Democrats – also came out in favor of it.

Yeah, Trumpka needs to STFU. He and his were in favor of the Keystone Pipeline so he doesn’t get to be the voice of reason here.

It was Walker’s attack on collective bargaining for state employees that Obama failed to keep his promise to march with workers. It wasn’t the recall election—that came later.

Obama didn’t say one single word about the historic protests, even though it was front page news in every newspaper in the country. In light of Obama’s very specific promise to “put on his comfortable shoes” and march with workers, there really isn’t any way to defend Obama’s silence. It was indisputably a cop-out and a broken promise on Obama’s part.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more things in this bill that favor a Dem agenda. Pelosi is one of the best House leaders there’ve been whether in the Minority or Majority. If she knows she can get the votes by offering incentives to various pols in her caucus , she’ll do it and telegraph that to the WH.

Agree. Pelosi working the floor and behind-the-scenes is a good thing.

History will judge her to be a historic figure who birthed the stimulus, ACA, Dodd-Frank, and other landmark measures.

Give it a fcking break. The workers of WI have put themselves in this bind. While not everyone in WI voted for Walker (three gddamn times!!) enough of them did. What historic protests? It WAS NOT on the front page of every newspaper in the country. Sorry, WI gets to take the blame by itself.

Food for thought from Digby’s Blog: http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/

She and her cohorts are highly recommended reading hint hint

It’s astounding to me the level of apologizing and excuses people on this site are willing to make for Obama. So much of the support from the commenters here comes from a desire to simply trust Obama, and a refusal to believe that he really can be the charlatan that he appears to be. Even when he appoints people like Geithner and Summers to be his economic advisors, even when he claimed to support homeowners while forcing states to accept HAMP, even when he voted for telecom immunity despite promising never to do so, even when it was proven that despite his claims he made a secret deal with Billy Tauzin of PhRMA to prevent drug price negotiation, even when he claims to support a NSA reform bill while at the same time calling Snowden a traitor and charging him not merely with leaking secrets but with espionage.

It’s difficult to admit to oneself that one has been deceived, and it’s easier to rationalize that Obama is a victim of Republican deception, or playing a brilliant game of eleventy dimensional chess. But when one can finally admit the truth to oneself, it is a liberating experience.

No, what’s astounding is the level of stupidity of people who constantly shoot themselves in both feet then turn around say it was somebody else’s fault. I am damn tired of hearing it. I don’t give a f*ck if you think I’m an Obot or not.

Could. not. care. less.

Every citizen is given the chance to take some modicum of control over their destiny by voting. Abrogate that chance and it’s on you.

Trust me, I will not abrogate that chance. Bring on President Walker, and bring on the revolution that tosses these corporate fellating sonsofbitches to the ditch where they belong.

If the Democrats will not work for us, they will not work at all.

Could. Not. Care. More. Rewarding traitors to the cause of the working stiff gets us nowhere.

Frankly I have become a cynic, these big issues and bills are just what one side needs to hit their “pork barrels” in and there is still no guarantee that a lot of workers won’t be displaced, or that provisions will be made for retraining, as if we can take our workers who load and unload cargo ships and help them become anything more that fast food workers. Corporations are maneuvering and manipulating this for profit and you can bet that the politicians are listening to them not the workers. I am sorely disappointed in Mr. Obama on this issue.
