Discussion for article #240705
keep fondling that giant gavel you weasel… its your whole raison d’être…
I think, just for trolling, that some progressive democrats should announce they won’t help Boehner out of his jam (and remember, he could pass a funding bill in 20 minutes if he were willing to be even a little bipartisan) unless he increases funding for Planned Parenthood.
Have we ever had a presidential debate during a government shutdown? Because that would make for some good TV right there.
I swear this is like the 10th time I’ve read this story here over the last few years. You guys are just changing the date every time. I hope.
The excuse for the government shutdown also changes (debt ceiling, Obamacare, Planned Parenthood). Next year it will be the towels or airdryers in the House Mens’ room.
“The situation reflects a Republican leadership eager to avoid a shutdown, fearing its consequences on the 2016 race, but unsure how to rein in the most extreme elements of its caucus, who see the 2014 GOP congressional victories as a mandate to double-down on the most hardline stances of the party.”
What is truly stunning about that sentence (besides its length), is its true. The really have no idea of how to rein in the most extreme elements, when its perfectly obvious to everyone else.
Pass a clean appropriations bill, with no funding cuts for PP, and receive full support from the Democrats. Shutdown avoided, extremists minimized and pushed to the curb. Done.
So much money
So much system
So much stupid-messaging
So many Baggers determined to vote
JB in charge of HouseTrashing Juvenile TeaLinquents…
What could possibly go wrong??? clink
Ideological purity is more important than winning Presidential elections to this faction. Problem they will face is the ideologically pure while very loud, is a small minority (even among self identified republicans), and they might find out that its not a winning idea even in their districts if it starts to affect constituents. They got a gift last time with Healthcare.gov changing the subject rather quickly…sparing them to consequences. They wont get that gift this go around.
Let them shut it down.Over 70% of America supports PP.And people will be really angry tohave to go thru another GOP caused shutdown. We will lose billions, people will lose income, vacation plans will get messed up, and the GOP will be seen even more s the hateful extremists they’ve become.
The ones that want to throw a coup will want to throw one anyway. There is one group that would be happy to destroy government at any level just out of principle.
Boehner’s dilemma as seen through his alcohol-induced fog:
Boehner: Nancy, I need forty Democratic votes to pass a budget.
Pelosi: John, I need $1 trillion in domestic spending to make that happen for you.
Boehner: Done.
Pelosi: Happy to do it John. (holding up a bustier, fishnet stockings, and six-inch heels) And now that you’re my bitch, slip into this outfit before we go out there and announce this bipartisan agreement.
This is a corner of their own creation.
One would hope that someone, somewhere, among the GOP is learning some useful lessons here which will make a positive difference in the future.
Good. I hope they do manage to shut it down. Americans’ memories are so short they have to be reminded from time to time how useless the Republican Party is these days.
Yet another example that boner is bad at his job!
You would hope so but don’t hold your breath. At this point Republicans are barely able to function. There is no one in charge. There is complete chaos. This is the result of decades of propaganda and run away hatred being spread by the GOP. They are getting exactly what they deserve. I don’t believe they can save themselves from going the way of the whigs. There aren’t any adults with a reality based belief system left in the Republican party. Too bad, how sad.
With Yom Kippur, a speech by Pope Francis and a visit by the Chinese president interrupting congressional activity next week
A Jewish holiday, then a liberal activist Pope, followed by a Commie Atheist. Wow! Christians really are being persecuted! How will they ever get through this? Thanks Obama.
This to me is a major problem of the Dems. They never seem to counteroffer the RWer’s with an equally left wing bid. So the Repubs claim they are always the ones to compromise and the Dems get what they want. We need to constantly ask for more than we expect so we have some room to manoever.
