David Pulphus just won the lottery! I’d love to be this kid’s agent.
He should go to Cafe Press of one of those sites today and put this painting on t-shirts, mugs, book covers, hats, etc.
Can’t let the 1st Amendment cover political speech. If you have a political statement, make it via open carry, as Jesus instructed.
Freedom of Speech you dolt. Freedom of speech is not measured by allowing things you agree with but allowing speech or art that you disagree with. It’s easy if you agree with it but it’s much harder if you disagree with what is in front of you or being said. See you in court is right.
The First Amendment also applies to the curators of art exhibits, allowing them to decide what types of art are included in their displays. In this case, Pulphus’s First Amendment rights were protected because he is allowed to paint, display and sell the picture with no punishment and the House’s First Amendment Rights are protected by them facing no legal stricture forcing them to display any particular art.
Curator had it on the wall for weeks months. Politicians took it down.
No surprise the painting was removed. You can’t run a proper authoritarian regime if you don’t police degenerate art.
Curator works for the politicians. It is their display. Politicians have First Amendment rights, too.
If Pulphus were to put these on shirts like I suggested, hundreds of people could wander around the House and no one would stop them. The painting is not forbidden in the House, just not part of the art display.
There is no First Amendment Issue here.
If anyone is interested the Young Republican National Federation is organizing work parties to begin draping offensive statues in communities across America during Spring Break '17. The program will be advised and mentored by former United States Attorney General and noted Omne bonum decet episcopum John Ashcroft.
Following completion of this first “Decency in Art and Culture” community service project, the YRNF plans to form ad hoc committees nationwide to evaluate and sanction paintings and other visual medias to insure the purity of our national values.
Also, don’t miss the YRNF Singers performing their new Official Anthem at the “The Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration” on Jan. 19, which will air in its entirety from 4-6 p.m. (Eastern) on RT television.
Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash., complained the painting violated rules for the competition, which state that works depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or of a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed.
Purely subjective hogwash and does not belong in rules regarding art. Besides, this painting was voted on to be in this artshow, even if those rules were in place. So apparently the folks that voted for it, didn’t see it Representative Reichstag’s way.
My hope is that young David Pulphus makes his painting available as a giclee so we all can personally enjoy it. I would buy it in a heartbeat (providing I could afford it) and hopefully encourage him to continue on with his work in creating more art. My other hope is that the Smithsonian asks him if they can display it in the museum so more people can see it.
IMO, court rulings on the First Amendment have not amounted to a “it’s their display, so they set the rules” shoulder shrug when the government is taking action to limit speech.
srfromgr’s point about the appropriateness of “contemporary political controversy” is an important one, because “political controversy” can be manufactured for any topic or work of art.
I wonder if any of the other Congressional Art Contest winners will ask to have their pictures removed? A little show of solidarity?
It is amazing how many people, conservatives and liberals, have no clue on the First Amendment. Unreal. I will say there are far more conservatives who don’t get it, but we liberals have clueless among us too.
Another poster in a previous article said there was a statue of Jefferson Davis in the same building. If that is the case, the proper move would be to demand that be removed because as an American, I find that offensive. THAT is the right move, see how the caretaker who makes these judgments handles that. Granted, removal of that statue would be costly, but covering it up would not be.
This has nothing to do with Free Speech, no one was arrested.
There is nothing “manufactured” in the interpretation of this painting. It was created to be controversial.
Oh, good lord.
And btw:
- Headline writer, the guy the cop’s shooting is shown as an animal, too.
- AP writer: That’s not a pig; maybe a wild boar. Stop taking dictation from propagandizing right-wingers.
Lazy/cowed/careerist “journalists” continue to be at least as responsible for our perilous state as the sick modern Republican party itself.
What about dogs playing poker, can that stay up?
Important safety information:
Blue uniforms may rarely cause a prolonged (eg, more than 4 hours) or painful erection. This could happen even when you are not having sex. If this is not treated right away, it could lead to permanent sexual problems such as impotence. Contact your doctor right away if you have an erection that lasts more than 4 hours.
If you think I am directing this at you, then I am.
In the famous words of the great Donald Trump, “Wrongggggaaa.”
The painting is a symbol of the Republican Congress, hungrily pursuing an appetite for overt corruption under the threat of physical violence while clothed in the uniform which commands the respect of the citizens, whom the Republican pigs harm.
We love good cops.
Who started the awful, fake news that we don’t?
