Our own doomsday cults – preppers and would-be Wolverines – almost certainly have recipes for DIY ricin. It’s appeal would be that you can grow your own.

What’s interesting is who wasn’t targeted - Mattis’ military counterpart is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but he isn’t mentioned as a target. Neither were the military heads of the Army or USAF - or any of the civilian heads of the services.
Did Mattis and Admiral Richardson implement / enforce a trump administration policy that triggered someone crazy enough to do something this stupid?
