Discussion: Orrin Hatch: I'll Support Romney 'If Mitt Decides To Run'

Nobody’s told Orrin he forgot to do up his fly …

Well DUH!

Romney is a high-ranking member of the Mormon Church, Very Wealthy, heavily connected politically, and in Trump-time he seems like a rational, safe, choice, especially in Utah, which never really warmed to Trump (his “47%” remark, which was outrageous at the time just seems “quaint” now.)
Hatch would HAVE to support him if he runs (and I believe he will.)

Senator Romney will be just as much of a mendacious empty suit as Senator Hatch.

Also, he’ll be the junior senator to Mike fucking Lee. Good grief.

Orrin “The Ossified Sphincter” Hatch supports Mitt “Bob, The Sub-Genius” Romney.
An if he wins, Utah gets to stay in the 15th Century another 6 years. Go, team!

That should gain Mitt the votes of people born before 1823, who harbor views common in 1323. It will cost Mitt the votes of sentient beings in Utah. I call it a wash.

Hatch’s recent behavior leads one to believe that he has “snapped a twig.” His ass kissing of Trump was especially creepy.

More Hatch …“did I mention I am a rapacious, duplicitous idiot…”…?

Hatch became toxic in Utah after the Salt Lake Tribune published an editorial ripping him for his tax cut support and his office responded poorly. Someone must have told him he’d be in danger of losing after that…Utahns are many things, but one thing they don’t like is leaders who show no empathy (they can ignore actions as well as anyone else though). Mitt is a good candidate for Utah, but he will get a hard right challenger of some kind, who will be popular in the rural areas but not in Salt Lake. The Democrats would need something like what happened in Alabama to win the seat, but it is possible…Salt Lake City is actually quite liberal in many ways and the state would elect the right Democratic candidate.

Without even an official announcement of his candidacy rMoney has 44% of Utah voters favoring him over three or four others who are polling in single digits including the African American critter from UT Mia Love.

@drriddle

@benthere I still remember Hatch kissing Clarence’s ass, and Biden was not much better giving him “the benefit of the doubt.” A pox on Biden and his prospects for 2020.

You see serious dementia strikes right there. We’ve known it for quite some time…

Mitt is well known, so I wouldn’t put any stock in a poll like that against unknown candidates just yet…wait until we see if he gets any real challengers, and if they can stir up the crazies the way Moore did. I doubt that they can do that in Utah, it’s not like Alabama, but it’s possible that they could pull enough over to cause a bit of heartache for Mitt. Bannon would probably love to get a right wing nut job to challenge Mitt, he hates that kind of Republican.

Bannon’s star is descending if not completely dead as of today. He’s in no position to influence a UT Senatorial election, but I think Mitt represents all the cultural and family values UT holds dear, faithful husband, ambitions children, wealth, etc., as much as they hate what PuPPet represents which is just the opposite.

Yep…I grew up there so I know how he fits in with the culture. There is the same undergrowth of fascism that we see in other parts of the west…the takeover in Oregon came from the same group, Bundy and company follow along with what you see in rural Utah. It’s really a question of if the right wing can find someone who fires up that base, and who can use the Utah primary system to get that right winger onto the ballot…that’s what happened to get Mike Lee into office, the right wing took over the primary and pushed Bennett out. The right crazy person could do that again, even to Mitt (who is a lot like Bennett politically but with more recognition now), at which point a good Democrat could pull an upset, since the Mormons do not like the Trump path for the nation in general. Hatch’s support could actually work against Mitt as well, people really were pissed at him and his comments.

I’m not saying it will happen this way, I expect Romney to walk to the Senate…I’m saying it’s more possible than people think, and maybe we’ll get lucky, especially in a blue wave, if Utah Republicans follow the Alabama path.

But Luther Strange was appointed by a Governor who he was supposed to be investigating. His appointment shut down that investigation, though the governor still ended up resigning. So his selection as senator was really embroiled in a cloud of scandal. Mitt is not, and is well liked in Utah for both saving the salt lake city Olympics and being the first Mormon on to run on a major party ticket for President. I don’t see Mitt having any problem wrapping up this Senate seat.

his current term ends in 2018

No, @mattshuham, it does not.

On the other hand, this feels sort of like Joseph Ratzinger, an elderly Right Wing Conservative, being chosen as the Pope after 28 years of Pope John Paul II, just some more of the same. And after his decades long run, Orrin Hatch presumes to influence who succeeds him. Fuck Orrin Hatch. And fuck Mitt Romney too.
