Holy shit! That George Soros must have one helluva large family!
Come on Beto! Spend that money to beat the cruz creep!
Democrats haven’t won a statewide seat in TX since the mid 90’s. If O’Rourke wins, he will break an 0 for 83 streak. He is not battling uphill, this is a straight vertical ascent. I am afraid it will be a moral victory where he comes closer than anyone has in a long time, due in large part to the utter unlike-ability of one Ted Cruz.
I’d like to see trucks all over Texas with billboards of Trump’s 2016 comments about Cruz on them. I think it would a useful way to spend at least some of that money.
Too many liberals equate donations from the grass-roots as being a sure fire way to win. Money is necessary in politics to get your message and your people out there. But, - money doesn’t equal votes. Sending Beto money at this point in time isn’t going to help him win.
Beto is getting showered with cash at the expense of other Dem candidates that need the money even more than he does.
What the point? The voters here are baked in and he won’t win. I hope I’m wrong but literally one poll (yeah, yeah, “polls”) show him with more support than the Cruz. Its a waste of money.
If it’s too late for cash to help Beto, how will it help other Democrats?
Lots and lots of small donations means lots and lots of excitement about that candidate. That equates to lots and lots of VOTERS. I suspect the people who actually show up to vote for Beto are severely under-represented in the polls. They are not your typically reliable voter, but they’ll turn out for this midterm. Think Obama voters. Our challenge will be to turn them into reliable voters.
Beto’s strategy is a mystery to all the beltway punditry because he’s not doing what they think he needs to be doing.
This haul represents grassroots energy the same way his overcapacity rallies do. In a nonvoting state, he’s bringing in voters that either have never participated or don’t usually vote in non-presidential years.
The national Democrats have long written off Texas as anything but an ATM. Instead of bringing in the DC- class consultants, who, BTW, would have written him off last year, Beto has been doing a remarkable job… Running a shoe-leather, grass-roots campaign.
Don’t underestimate the effect in rural counties where Cruz has never shown up of having a candidate come in and talk with them… They just might go with the candidate that showed up (especially if they think their votes are taken for granted).
If you’re donating, our path to a tied Senate or to a D+2 Senate is through contributing to Rosen (NV), Sinema (AZ), and holding incumbent at risk seats in ND and MO. We also have to keep a watchful eye on MT and IN.
Beto’s money may be quite helpful for 3-4 house seats, but it is unlikely to get him the win.
There is an outside path for him to win and that would be for him to max out turnout at GE levels with improved margins in the 30 or so counties that voted for HRC over Trump, while Cruz counties sit at traditional mid-term turnout. To use a basketball analogy, we have to shoot 60% from the 3pt line and hope the other side shoots less than 40% from the field overall.
Rosen, Sinema and Heitkamp (among others) need the lucre.
Only “moral victory” will be to win the damn Senate seat.
GOTV!
With all due respect, I think donors can figure out which candidates should get their money.
Beto needs to use the $$s to GOTV. Lots of down-ballot Texas candidates will rise with the tide.
My experience on phone banks causes me to disagree that this vote is baked in.
Beto isn’t getting anything from DNC or PACs, so not sure how he is taking money from other Dems.
Money versus Tribalism.
Which horse is gonna win?
May the spirit of Ann Richards shine upon Texas this November.
Yep - new voter registration in Texas has reached record proportions so the old the voters are set in stone no longer applies here.
Please see my post on record new voter registration in Texas.
A good number of the families that left PR after Maria did move to Texas, I am hoping they’ve registered to vote.
Ooo =- that’s news to me and hooray and hell I hope so too.
I’d like to see Beto spend some of that on a lengthy TV spot, in English and Spanish, kinda like Obama did in 2008. Use that time to spread the positive and respectful message that he does at his townhalls. And the GOTV campaign is in full swing with a goal of knocking on 102,000 doors just this weekend. Go Beto!
