This is like some of the crypto-racists that try to relitigate the Civil War by arguing that slaves were treated great because they were such valuable property that slaveowners had no incentive to be cruel. And that slaves had it better than non-slave owning whites.
This is the same sort of shit.

The conservatives are actually pushing this meme. That indentured servitude was exactly the same as slavery.
Um, no. Poor people, no matter the color, have always been treated like shit, it’s still not the same as slavery, as having the right to own you and your offspring forever.

In actuality, not all slaves were well fed. Some slave owners had the audacity to nearly starve their slaves and expect them to work from sun up to sundown. They were treated worse than the livestock. What evidence Bill O. has to confirm the veracity of his statement that the slaves who built the White House were well fed and lodged? As if that makes it any better anyway(land of the free and home of the brave)!

Well, if I may posit a theory: About 2-3 years ago, the term “PC” started popping up on conservative media. We used to use it in the late 80s/early 90s to describe ourselves. It’s a phrase that had lain dormant since the early 90s, and suddenly it was showing up in RW media, and now it’s friggin’ everywhere. I post on sports boards for my college (I’m a college sports nut), and people even use it there: “I know this is not PC, but…[insert awful racist statement here]”. And that’s on a sports board.
It’s used mostly as an insult against liberals, but it’s also armor to shield themselves against their radically RW and even racist or violent statements.
It’s no accident that it’s easing into something like Bill O’Reilly said tonight. Or that mentions of slavery were deleted from Texas textbooks. “You’re just being PC” belittles their opposition in their mind and gives them license to trample liberals in their path. It’s pretty vile and hateful. But the groundwork was laid a few years ago with the reemergence of the phrase “PC”. I’d just like to know who made the decision to put that term back out there; it’s an odd thing to resurrect, and it doesn’t seem like an accident.
That’s my kooky theory anyway.

Oh, well, that’s ok then. This might be a good time for Fox to renegotiate O’Reilly’s contract offering him food and lodging instead of wages, since he deems that acceptable for people who undoubtedly worked a great deal harder than he ever has.

Certainly not all slaves were well fed everywhere, but most slave owners were hard-nosed businessmen and expected to extract as much work from their slaves as humanly possible, since that meant the most money in their pocket, and that required feeding the slaves well - if they were able to work. It was not out of the goodness of their hearts. It was a grueling existence, constant labor with at best a half day off once a week, from the time they were able to start working (even small children were put to work) with no retirement ever. And a slave who suffered an injury that made them permanently incapable of work, well…
Manual labor requires calories to perform the work, without sufficient calories the amount of possible labor is reduced.

Someone pointed out on Twitter: conservatives seem to think that everything is slavery (taxes, gun control, health care), except for slavery itself, which wasn’t so bad and probably was better for blacks than welfare.
