Discussion for article #228510
Affleck wasn’t talking specifically about ISIL. O’Reilly’s statement is an attack on a fabricated point.
Fox News.
“Mr. Maher Dr. Chomsky is correct on the overall effect Islam hegemonic Judeo-Christian corporate facsism is having on the world right now,” O’Reilly Trippin said. “The truth is militant Islam hegemonic Judeo-Christian corporate facsism continues to drive worldwide terrorism and have plenty of sanctuaries from which to commit their evil.”
Obviously O’Reilly didn’t watch Affleck. I think he understands ISIL is crazy. Ben was talking about Maher’s attack on all 1.5 billion muslims.
It’s also funny to see that between the lines, O’Reilly makes some statements that would seem to side with Affleck to a degree. Using devices like “sure, there are some exceptions to the rule…” and “well, not all…”. How disingenuous. And hey, maybe if Fox News aired segments that actually showed members of Islam condemning violence, instead of their strict “Always make Muslims look bad” policy, there may actually be a different perception?
Fox News makes me feel like I’m still trapped in high school with dumb violent cowards.
And once again the point goes screaming right over Brillo’s head.
ISIL would behead Bill O’Reilly simply because he is an asshole.
“Ben Affleck should well understand that he himself would be beheaded in a heartbeat by these ISIS animals.”
Perhaps. But Bill’O says this as though he believes that he would somehow be spared that fate, were he in ISIS’ hands.
I do think Affleck somewhat misunderstood Maher’s point, which is that, as a group, the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims aren’t particularly enlightened when it comes to culture and human rights. Affleck understood Maher to be saying that they’re all violent, and Maher repeatedly tried to explain that he wasn’t saying that at all.
In general, I think Maher’s beliefs regarding Islam are a bit apocalyptic, but in this case, I think he may have had a valid point.
ISIL would sodomize Bill O’Reilly… with a grenade launcher.
So many straw men for BillO to chose from…Affleck is probably taking it as a badge of honor to be maligned by such an idiot, because his comments says a lot more about BillO than it does Affleck.
Figuratively, Faux Nuz runs entirely on over-stuffed scarecrows to keep old white folks frightened and in their corners shaking. In reality, they’re a kind of Terrorist News Network for rightwing nutjobs. They’ve practiced spreading hate as their main course, along with a side order of active rebellion against the government here and there for over a decade now.
If this “ringing” endorsement doesn’t give Bill Maher pause, than I don’t know what would.
Killing Ben Affleck?
Did you see Gigli? I felt like beheading him for wasting two hours of my life.
And Bill-O’s head is so far up his ass that to behead him ISIS would need to cut him in half at the waist.
You win the internets today!
You know, CHRISTIANITY also says you should KILL PEOPLE who Eat Shellfish or Work on the Sabbath or who don’t worship the same EXACT God you do.
It also says that you should sell your daughters into slavery, kill your wife if you get bored with her, and have sex with your own children if no other women is immediately available.
There are PLENTY of Christian Lunatics who would be very, very happy to kill you for not following their particular idea of what their invisible man in the sky told them to think. The ONLY thing that stops them is the threat of prosecution. If they could “get away” with it, they would. (see History of Lynching.)
Civilization is the only thing that can stop Zealotry and when Civilization is subsumed by Religion/Ideology you get ISIL, and Pol Pot, and Stalin, and Hitler, and the Inquisition, and the Crusades and too many more to count.
The INSANITY of RELIGION in ALL ITS FORMS is the problem. Not any one particular VERSION of insanity.
How many women presidents has the US had, and how many have Muslim countries elected? It’s not quite as black and white as you seem to think it is.
I don’t know that I think it’s “black and white” at all; I was simply saying that I think Ben Affleck misunderstood the point Maher was trying to make.
That said, I’m not sure that the number of women who have been elected in Muslim countries is necessarily indicative of their culture as a whole.
