When I saw the rainbow colored White House, I got a great deal of satisfaction in imagining the widespread heartburn the image would produce among bigots. But it’s really nice to have a face of a specific bigot to attach that heartburn to.

Well, Bill, if every government-owned inanimate object must reflect all possible views of the citizenry, the fact is plain white lights aren’t entirely inclusive either, and less so every year. By O’Reilly standards, he wasn’t “incensed”, he was “mildly peeved”. And what he said regarding Colbert was hardly “blasted” by any standard; “chided” (which is what the linked article says) is much closer. TPM headline writers are guilty of the same sin as O’Reilly, making a big deal out of very little. The problem is, what words are left to use for something that really is a big deal?

Yeah that’s a tough one. My mother’s side goes back to Plymouth MA where, at the time, they sailed into “Port St. Louis” and my father’s family arrived via Ellis Island in 1928. I guess that makes me some sort of Auslander, at least to my buddy who is half Cherokee and half Polish but he wasn’t too mad himself since he can now plan his wedding to his partner of 20 years. It’s going to take a long time for people like Bill to realize they’re not, in fact, living on the banks of a big river in Egypt but rather in a real world that actually exists.
