The Ruskies in WWII used a barbaric but effective tactic to force the disinterested to fight for them. They put the ‘volunteers’ in a trench with weapons between the Russian and German forces. Their only chance was to fight like hell. That’s what the GOP base is doing to GOP politicians … they fight or their political lives die.

So what you’re saying, in other words, is that Walden was too chicken-shit cowardly to say anything until the fear of repercussions from not saying anything became greater than his fear of pissing off wingnut militia types and the GOP base.
What a different tune when he was talking about non-violent crimes:
”If you want to stop greed, you’ve got to reintroduce fear into the system,” said Congressman Greg Walden, R-Ore. ”The penalties that were there and the ability to enforce them were inadequate. We increased the penalties for altering and destroying documents. Moreover we added fines and jail time. I don’t know that you’ll ever be able to stop a thief from stealing, but it will make it easier to catch them and send a message that they’re going to pay.”
So he want’s to make examples out of non-violent criminals, but when serial arsonists, because they are friends of his and ranchers in his district… now he cries about mandatory minimums.
