Discussion: Opposition To Trump National Emergency Grows In GOP-Led Senate

“I support what the president wants to do on border security, but not the way he has been advised to do it,” said Alexander, 78. “It is unnecessary and unwise to turn a border crisis into a constitutional crisis about separation of powers.”

Not a crisis. Also, some of the existing problems would be solved by adding more border facilities and agents to run them. They’re overwhelmed by the current, mostly legal traffic, so some illegal things that have to come through the checkpoints (eg, tons of drugs and weapons that can’t be transported over the river, desert, etc) slip by.

With four sponsors it’s already passed the Senate.

The question still is are you an American or are you a Trump".

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, was among those suggesting provisions making it harder for future presidents to divert federal dollars to projects of their choosing by declaring emergencies.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if some changes are made,” said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

If they can just get the language changed so only republikkkan presidents can circumvent congress with phony emergency declarations - they could get behind that.

Good luck, assholes.

At this point it’s probably a question of how much it passes by, which I think is important.

This is a rare moment when McConnell isn’t covering for Trump and the basic principle of executive overreach is one conservatives claim to care about. Time to drive the wedge.

Yes, I completely agree! I don’t know how my comment ended up as a reply to your post. That wasn’t what I intended. I meant it as a general observation – that Goal 1 is already achieved.

Two of the sponsors are Democrats and one other Republican has announced he’ll vote for it so it’s still one Republican short of passage.

The votes are probably there but the Republicans really really don’t want to do that.

“I really think that Republicans that vote against border security and the wall, I think you know, I’ve been OK at predicting things, I think they put themselves at great jeopardy,” Trump said in excerpts of an interview with Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” show released Thursday.

And if they vote against border security, the wall, and the emergency, they will also probably vote to take away your hamburgers. They’ll straight up snatch them out of your grandchildren’s mouths–and probably take their biggie fries in the process.

Ah…thanks…my mistake. I still think we’re there, but yes, I was wrong.

So, what is this other money Dipshit can use for Wall without declaring emergency? And why does that sound like Alexander trying t rescue him with bullshit?

Can not understand why it takes weeks for the senate to vote on this. If it is a real emergency, McConnell should have scheduled the vote immediately. If it is not a real emergency, every senator should (as every house member should have) vote no. Otherwise, they are saying it is OK for the president to ignore their appropriations and he can spend any money the way HE wants to. It is like voting away your authority.

Stop making sense.

edit: supposed to be a reply to oscarhomolka’s post, which I very much agree with.

Change of subject, just to take a moment away from 24/7 tRUmp…

Early last summer my daughter came home with 3 kittens so small each would fit in the palm of your hand. Vet said they we 12/13 weeks at about 8 oz per, so they are just about a year old now. She found them a mile from nearest home playing in the road. They are smart and the other day one of them showed me that they are thinking about actions and reactions. We have a ranch style home and therefore have a very long hallway stretching from kitchen/garage door to master bath (past dining room, family room, living room and bedroom to give an understanding of length). The medium hair kitten pushes herself against the kitchen/garage door and takes off as a streak down the hall. She proceeds to apply the brakes to stop on the edge of a hall runner. The momentum transfers to the runner and she goes sliding away. First I heard the noise I’m sitting at the computer and it did not register, going for a coffee refill I straighten the runner. After the 3rd or 4th time the noise hit me, I stopped and watched. Sure enough there goes kitty. She must have sensed me as she turned and meowed as she slid by. Hard to believe so I straighten the runner and sure enough she scampered to the door and took of running. In my mind that is a year old kitten thinking about actions that bring about reactions she enjoys. Have tried to get video but so far she walks away after I set up camera, I did say smart.

I know looks don’t matter but man that pic of McConnel, yikes!

Because he knows it’s not an emergency, and he knows everyone else knows it not an emergency, so he has time to try and figure out a way to not make himself or Donald look like an idiot but there isn’t any real way.

Exactly. These scumbags are not concerned about Trump violating the separation of powers. They are trying to hamstring future Non-Republican Presidents stuck with a Mitch McConnell 450 filibuster Senate minority or majority. Fuck them. The whole traitorous Dixiecrat lot of them.

So ironic – 50 years back, Pat Buchanan talked Nixon into the “Southern Strategy”, prying the dixiecrats loose from the Democratic Party. I don’t think he envisioned they would take over the Republican Party. And now they are destroying the GOP. (Revenge for “the late unpleasantness”?)

Meanwhile, Collins and three other moderate senators introduced their own resolution blocking the emergency.

The proposal is identical to the one-sentence, House-approved measure. The new legislation lets senators put their stamp on congressional opposition to Trump’s move.

I don’t understand what this accomplishes; it seems redundant. Is the idea to vote on something that originates in the Senate? How does that benefit anyone?
