Will principled Mitt beg Trump for The Donald’s endorsement, like he did during the 2012 Presidential election?

ā€œResurgenceā€ ? Did he ever ā€˜surge’ before ?

Mitt Romney is a soulless and often craven opportunist. At the same time, he doesn’t seem to be running to increase his personal wealth, is well mannered and is unlikely to declare the federal bureaucracy to be the ā€˜Deep State’. He is also unlikely to support attempts to dismantle the independent judiciary or eliminate all congressional oversight of the president. In the current crisis atmosphere, I think he would be a net plus!

I have always maintained that having another old, rich, white male is just what the US Senate needs. After all, the most progressive and innovative companies in the world routinely rely on maintaining an aged workforce in its 70s and 80s, especially those who are out of touch with the needs of 99% of society. It’s a key pillar to a successful business model. So obviously Mittens will be a real ā€œgetā€ for the Senate. Plus, he comes with binders full of women!

When 70 year olds are replacing 83 year olds, the gerontocracy is complete.

True that. I’m always reminded that the old Soviet Politburo, at 7%, had a higher turnover rate than the US Senate.

Romney is one of the most craven, intellectually dishonest, calculating, and corrupted-by-ambition politicians out there. There is zero chance that he will stand up to Trump in any way that’s meaningful–except, perhaps, to revive his own inextinguishable presidential ambitions. And yet his the best the GOP currently has to offer.

I think he should run for President of the Mormon church.

It’s hard to fathom what he has to gain by this. At this point in his life, this is almost a demotion. BUT…Romney has been groomed since his youth by the Mormon Church for ascendancy to the highest office as a sort of fulfillment of prophecy and he may feel it is his destiny to take his faith to this level of power. He may also (and rightly so) see Trump as an illegitimate holder of such power (it must grate on him that so many others passed him by, the young black man Barack Obama, the fake maverick war vet McCain, and now the immoral Trump), and think that he alone can restore legitimacy. I get that he LOOKS like central casting’s idea of a Senator, and I also think that the LDS leadership are whispering in his ear that this might position him just right for what is destined for him and them.

Just what the Senate and the country needs; another 70-year old white man. C’mon, Utah, you can do better! Watch Alabama for how to do it right.

Mitt would hate the Senate. He’s not a legislator. Who’s urging him to consider this?

The republican party has fully embraced Trump. It is beyond redemption. If Romney goes to the Senate thinking he will be a counter to Trump, Trump will strip him naked and eat his lunch. The only way Romney can be an effective agent against Trump is if he runs as a Republican and then switches parties. That’s the only thing Romney can to to hurt Trump where it counts.

Probably not. But not because of principles, rather because Trump is very unpopular in Utah. Its always about political expediency with Romney.

Keep in mind, after spending much of the election denouncing Trump as both a primary candidate and the general election candidate…he then went and publicly grovelled for the SoS position.

That being said, I am slightly interested how the press (and sadly, TPM followed suit) bent over backwards to anoint Romney for the seat. What about McMullen? And especially…what about Chaffetz? It might still be too soon for Chaffetz, but I would love to see a bit more media scrutiny into why that is.

Its not that hard…political power. He has no where else to go at 70, besides off into the sunset, which is something he clearly isn’t ready to do. He has been a governor, and in Utah, he would have a hard race, as much of the GOP would view him as getting in the way of some other younger, rising star. Senate is where they like to put people out to pasture…the ā€œelder statesmanā€ role.

And yes, there probably is a fair amount of LDS whispering going into his ears about how the church OWNS that seat and its his duty to claim and protect it for them. But at best, Romney would be looking at 2…3 on the VERY outside…terms. That matters because with such a short time frame, its doubtful he ever gets much off the bench, and he will never have a significant leadership role in the GOP Senate caucus.

Is there an ā€œArlen Specterā€ moment on the horizon?

More like, pre-surgence, eh.
He doesn’t need momentum to walk into a seat that he doesn’t have to really campaign for, let alone fight.

If Romnerd had any juevos whatsoever he would’ve run in Massachusetts again or possibly California. That would’ve required massive resurgence as opposed to a glide path.
