Discussion for article #223364
One American for five dirt bags…still not a great deal but one that we can live with since it brought back Sgt. Bergdahl.
Welcome home, soldier!
(bold added for Darcy’s benefit.)
Cue FOX Echo Chamber, the Rightie WooWoos and GOPig Loonies: “Obama negotiates with terrrrists’!!!”…in 3…2…1
Let’s not show him any episodes of Homeland yet, shall we?
I’m already reading shit that this guy was a deserter and that was the reason he got caught.
When they do, just remind them that St. Reagan, with the help of his buddy Olly North, sold sold thousands of anti-tank missiles to Ayatollah Khomeini and the Iranians for hostages.
Grrrrr… That makes me want to set the caps lock and scream into the void.
ETA: I don’t think I’d be able to respond to someone who said that without falling into a profanity laced rage.
Obama negotiates with terrorist and President Reagan trading arms to terrorist is OK thats strategic just like Rand Paul saying president Reagan cut and run from Lebanon was a strategic withdrawal.
and its not Fox news please call them by there right name
BULLSHIT MOUNTAIN.
Its great day! There is a very happy family in america today.
Why did it take so long? This could have been solved years ago, drones could have then been used to wipe out the scum released from Guantanamo.
Sounds like a good deal to me. I would have traded every one we’re holding at GTMO for him. The people we’re holding at GTMO aren’t doing us a damn bit of good. Besides, there are plenty more where those came from.
“I’m already reading shit that this guy was a deserter and that was the reason he got caught.”
That idea has been around since day one and many people including myself believe that is what happened.
These are men from B Co, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, Bergdahl’s unit, that were KIA while actively searching for Bergdahl:
PFC Matthew Michael Martinek
SSG Kurt Robert Curtiss
SSG Clayton Bowen
PFC Morris Walker
SSG Michael Murphrey
2LT Darryn Andrews
You believed he was a traitor?
I believe he was a naive young man.
I absolutely do NOT believe he was a traitor. However, it’s my understanding that at some point after he originally got to base, he decided to do “a walkabout” not realizing the severity of the situation the base was in. Of course, that is no reason whatsoever to leave anyone behind and I’m glad that he’s finally freed.
Good news!
538, I wonder who the 5 are. Some of the “dirtbags” at Guantanamo are seriously bad folk … Khaled Sheikh Mohammed for example, the mastermind of 9/11. And if anyone thinks these guys will be staying in Qatar for a year I got a bridge ta sell ya.
So you would release KSM (Khaled Sheihk Mohammed) who was the admitted and confessed mastermind of 9/11 during which nearly 3000 innocent prople were killed as if he were nothing? Really? Of course the folks being held at gitmo “aren’t doing us a damned bit of good.” Why would you expect they would be? They hate us and fought against us. I doubt they would be on our side. If given a chance I’m sure they would take pleasure in taking out as many Americans as they could.
You are using a logical fallacy and it diminishes your point.
KSM should have been tried in a US court, and should be in a US prison.
Only about 30 or so of the Gitmo prisoners is a danger to the US—the rest are just victims of the Bush administration’s paranoia and ham-handed policies.
They should be set free somewhere.
Gitmo creates more animosity toward the US than almost any other action the US has taken since 2001.
It should and must be closed.
I thought about holding back KSM, but as someone directly involved in 9/11, once he’s out of our custody, he’s fair game to be AUMF’ed. Perhaps you’ve forgotten the wording of the AUMF of 2001:
(a) IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons. If we keep him in custody, we’ve got to give him a showy trial (eventually). Put a GSM chip in him and wait until he’s surrounded by a bunch of his buds before unloading on him. No point in wasting a perfectly good Hellfire missile on just one guy.
