Discussion: O'Malley Jabs Hillary Clinton For Flipping On Same-Sex Marriage

Discussion for article #235397

Being the first person to comment means no one else gives a shit about what this man has to say. Now if he can just overcome the 50 point deficit in polling and also say something meaningful, he might be worth a few minutes of chatter

This is one flip-flop call no one will ever hear. The nation itself has been involved in a massive flip on this issue.

Has he formed an exploratory committee yet? Has he done anything besides visiting Iowa or NH or take shots at HRC from the sidelines? Is he trying to take her out/down from the sidelines to get in the game?

Martin who?

Oh come on Martin, the surest sign of a low intellect is the inability to change, modify or adjust ideological positions. If that is your starting point I then strongly recommend you to seek the nomination of the Republican party. You darn well know that Hillary adjustment of her position on on gay marriage and immigration is a natural progression that is not unique to her. You must be congratulated on your vision as far as gay marriage is concern. I hate the media throwing the term flip-flop at any change a politician makes on a issue. There is such a thing a vigorous discourse and discussion, called debate, and the goal is to convince others and change minds. To always ascribe cynical reasons to peoples progression thru an issue is part of what ails our political system.

He is just pissed that she did her change an hour before he released his ad attacking her old position. He ended up with egg on his face.

Anyone in Hillory’s age range who now supports gay marriage has probably flipped on this issue at some point in their life.

Agreed. It’s kind of a stupid issue on which to call her a flip flopper. The vast majority of Americans who now support marriage equality have flip flopped on the issue.

Absolutely, pols should be free to evolve. It does us no good if leaders and lawmakers feel they have to stick to a particular belief for fear of being labeled a flip flopper.

“I’m glad she’s come around on the issue” is a pretty tame jab. I score this as further evidence he’s running for Veep.

I like him. Have for a long time. I hope he gets in the race.

Hell, I’ll probably vote for him for all the good it will do.

But, while we don’t necessarily have to reward people for moving left, we really ought not to ding them for it.

The thing is, if you are an adult over the age of 40, you have probably “changed your mind” about many things related to gay and lesbian and transgendered people during the course of your lifetime, this being one of them. And that is a very fortunate thing. Which is to say, O’Malley might be indirectly insulting voters by somehow implying that not having supported equal marriage rights a long time ago makes someone suspect. It will be a while before gay rights becomes like civil rights for others – something no one will ever admit that they did not support during the course of their adult life.

Yep. I was about to post a mild reprimand to O’Malley after reading the headline, but then decided to read the article first in case he said something like, “I’m glad Secretary Clinton has joined us on the issue.” Which he did.

O’Malley didn’t call her a flip-flopper or anything derogatory - he just pointed out he was there first on the issue of making same-sex marriage a federal right, which is a fair point if not a particularly newsworthy point.

I actually disagree. I think calling her out for this is a good idea for two main reasons. 1) It won’t hurt her in the general election. Why? Because none of the current GOP/Rightwing hopefuls are even saying they support gay marriage (and some are vehemently against it); and 2) if you don’t call her out for not being out in front of this issue, you can’t beat your chest when you are out in front of the GOP on the vast majority of other important issues.

Should you be nasty about it? No. But if you call her out, and say, “look, it’s about time she came around, I’ve been on the right side of history”, you can get a ton of credibility when you say “look at the democrats, we’ve been right about all of these issues (healthcare, global warming/climate change, economy, drugs, money in politics, the 1%/income inequality) and you should hold the GOP accountable for being consistently wrong for decades!”

Actually this guy is a very progressive governor on his record and he had no problem ripping Governor McDonnell a new ass one day in a one on one. He is extremely capable - I would love to see him get in this race - if nothing but to deflect some of the shit flying and will continue to fly against Hillary. We need a real primary not a coronation

See that’s what pisses me off about TPM. They use these crack/catnip headlines to get us to click and comment and we are all guilty of not reading the entire article

You didn’t read what he said did you

O’Malley is pretty sharp, but this is just silly.

And the headline is just false.

The headline pisses me off. They say the authors don’t write the headlines but whoever does at TPM, shame on you. You would think they know us well enough to read a story on our own without using catnip headlines. o’Malley is very sharp and I give a shit what he has to say
