“In the Ohio case, defense attorneys pointed out the map will change again after the 2020 census, and that Ohio voters have already passed a bipartisan ballot initiative to reform the mapmaking process.”
Yeah, we cheated, but it’s gonna be fixed after 2020 so why don’t you just let us cheat one more time before then?
But will the ballot initiative passed by voters be rendered unrecognizable the way the felon voting rights restoration initiative in Florida has been (so far)?
“This is called democracy in action,” Strach, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, told the judges. He said “incumbency protection” gives all Ohioans more clout in Washington as representatives build seniority. As for oddly shaped districts, the defense said keeping district populations even trumps neatly drawn boundaries.
Mr Strach is a proud example of what passes for a Republican these days - a dishonest, anti-democratic, spinner for the GOP’s oligarchs.
I wonder how much he was involved in the recent election shenanigans in North Carolina - they seem right up his alley.
“Yeah, just let us run one more time on this map and we can cheat Ohio into FatNixon’s column and lock in a new even more unrepresentative map when we hold onto the Leg. too.”
Justice delayed is justice denied.
This is great. It’s also great that i read that the GOP is having trouble raising funds.
If ya can’t win legally or ethically, join the GOP.
True but this is the second great story on voting issues in two days.
In Texas, the gov, Abbott, and the AG, Paxton, attempted to remove 98,000 Texans from the voter rolls and were sued… Yesterday they were forced to settle and admit that their removal of voters was a complete cluster fuck. They removed all kinds of legitimate voters and they have no way to straighten it out. So they have to put them back on the rolls, had to publicly admit that it was a vote suppressing attempt and pay fines and court costs.
It was a beautiful and stunning victory.
Good to hear. Thanks for the link.
I agree, because of course political gerrymandering if awful.
That said, the more we see this kind the more hardened the Roberts 5 are going to be in finding a weaselly IOKIYAR ruling to maintain a check on demographics overrunning Republicans.
All post-2010 congressional maps drawn by Republicans are suspect. Its too bad its taken nearly a decade before the courts have realized that.
You know I don’t have a link, although I could probably find to the Dallas paper, which has a firewall. I got an email from an org. here yesterday that told me all about what had just happened with the settlement.
No, I was responding to the comment with the link to the Raw Story article. It just got positioned under your second comment.
O good. hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
You may have come across this news. Son of Jeb of twisting himself into a pretzel to be loyal to PP and distance himself at the same time. “Low energy” slam doesn’t bother him at all. Ambitious sons will be do anything in their lust for the governor’s seat.
Moderate (and I use the term loosely) Republicans seem like zombies now. Bush killed them all, yet they keep shuffling into view anyway, like the undead.
The office of Land Commissioner’s office in TX seems to be a stepping stone for ambitious pols, and son of Jeb has been re-elected so he’s on the flight path for bigger and better things. But how’s the boy going to explain support for the brown people hating president to his mom. And even worse to the browns in the state which is on its way to being purple if not already there.
At present Maine and Nebraska are the only states that select presidential electors by district. Just imagine the foul play possible if that became the norm in marginal Red states that are otherwise competitive.
Well, they did get their “voter purge” nonsense through the Supreme Court. Sham, sham, sham. It’s really hard to be a Democrat in Ohio and there are a lot of us.
