Discussion for article #231213
“We do not forsee any proselytizing happening between mentors and students,” Harris added. “That’s not really what we’re seeking.”
Oh, bullshit…the entire purpose of religious groups is proselytizing, that’s the only reason why they exist. Anything else is secondary.
That’s funny. I kinda remember there being a constitution that disallows this sort of thing.
“We do not forsee any proseletyzing happening between mentors and students…That’s not really what we’re seeking.”
Yes you do and yes it is, you religio-fascist sack of shit. You’re also hoping that having to partner with a business entity, more plutocratic conservative economic pixie dust will get shoved up the kids’ noses.
The very very first thing a school in a progressive area should do here is grab a Muslim group or maybe the local Buddhists or Scientologists and apply for the funds, just to watch the conservatives’ fucking heads explode.
(Obviously win-able) lawsuits in… 3…, 2…, 1…
“believes faith-based organizations play an important role in the lives of young people.”
Believes that those who most need assistance and help with their academics are fertile ground for planting new seeds of Christian conservatism.
FIFY
Time for The Satanic Temple to step right up. Your move guv’nor…
And I’m sure that Governor Kasich and his administration will be thrilled to include funding for mentoring partnerships with Muslim, Wiccan, pagan, Hindu, Buddhist, animist, Native American, Humanist, and similar faith-based groups that fall outside the narrow definition of the kind of Judeo-Christian institutions that they feel should “play an important role in the lives of young people.”
He does realize that what is is demanding is against the law doesn’t he? It will never survive a court challenge. On the other hand, I hope all the Muslim organizations and all the Jehovah’s witnesses and all the Domionists and all the Unitarians apply to be partners!!
Maybe other “partners” could focus on work for which they are qualified, light empty the trash and turning the lights on or off.
Illegal.
I take it he’s running for President.
unclear – if it was some after school program, keeping out religious groups would probably be what would be deemed illegal given USSC precedents
The PD endorsed this joker.

…
Rob Nichols, a spokesman for the governor, told the Plain Dealer that Kasich included the requirement because he “believes faith-based organizations play an important role in the lives of young people.”
Why does he feel - specifically - that "faith-based organizations play an important role in lives of young people? Why can’t a non -faith based organization do the same?
And who chooses the faith based group - is it the school? A lottery system? Picking from a hat?
I don’t know - giving preference to a religious organization over one that is not seems awfully unfair. I certainly hope there is more to this that we are not hearing - else this seems like a prime case of a law that needs to be challenged in court.
The original language did not require schools to work with religious organizations
They inserted the language to make sure it ends up before a court so they can make a campaign issue out of it.
Perhaps. That’s probably secondary. This is a test of our vigilance and another softball served up for the conservatives on the SCOTUS. Everyone knows that the GOP/Teatroll/right wing freakout over things like the AP history exam and what not are but one side of the coin when it comes to their hopes and strategies for staying alive in the face of demographic shifts and losing the youth vote. The other side of the coin is essentially destroying any standards in public education that, for example, keep out religious teachings or prevent public funds from being diverted to religious academic institutions. This fits right in with the kinds of shit Booby Jingle is doing down in LA with his voucher programs, approving institutions that teach shit like “the Loch Ness monster’s existence is proof that man and dinosaur shared the earth and calls into question things like the Big Bang theory and evolution” for the voucher program but withholding it from secular institutions. The past 6 years have seen the GOP/Teatrolls’ attacks on and attempts to rewrite academia to indoctrinate a new crop of conservatives taken to new and ever more blatant heights. Unfortunately, we’re NOT vigilant enough, academia is NOT vocal and activist enough about it and too much of this kind of shit is flying right under the radar. The MSM is no help because a populace of 300M indoctrinated and misinformed fucktards who can’t and don’t question whatever is spewed into their face during their daily “news” intake is the MSM’s wet dream.
Come on now, don’t let pesky facts get in the way, and don’t forget; the republic-baggers get to pick and choose when to play the Constitution card.
I’ll throw a vote in for Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or “Pastafarianism.”
It’s about time for the Satanists to show up again.
