I haven’t checked my AP Style Guide, but this seems to ascribe an unusual level of agency to food:

a community Thanksgiving meal they suspect killed three people

I picture the green beans tying themselves into a rope and strangling a woman, while the sharpened wishbone of the turkey stabs a man in the eye.
