Discussion: Odd Couple: Bill Clinton and George W. Bush Appear on Cover of TIME

Discussion for article #238676

Amazed HRC let him do this. Not good. The cover is poison. Talk about feeding the Trump beast…

Yes, please have George out on the stump for his brother. Remind us of all the lives and treasure lost under his administration. Remind us of his total incompetence. W. should be saying, “I will be hiding in an undisclosed, safe location where I will be painting myself showering.” Oh, and charging wounded vets surprising high speaking fees.

“Odd”? how so? Both were two term, complete failures, though in different ways.

For such a smart guy, Clinton can do some very stupid things. This is one in my opinion. I doubt most republicans read time.

I didn’t know anyone read Time any more, except maybe in the dentist’s office or on a long flight.

Both failures? When Clinton ended his term, we were at peace and getting rich. As Bush left, the opposite.

False equivalencies are best left to FOX News. President Clinton’s two terms were smashing successes when compared to the utterly disastrous Bush years.

Clinton left office with a budget surplus, Bush left office with the U.S. economy in the toilet, hanging on the verge of 2nd great depression, and two unfinished foreign wars of choice. There is no comparison between the two presidencies.

Beat me to it. Time and Newsweek are worthless rags. Someone dropped off a box of old magazines at my school, including 1970 - 1980 issues of Newsweek. Dense print, detailed articles, 6 columns per page, a few black and white pictures, incisive columnists (Mary McGory, anyone?). Even the movie reviews were insightful and worth reading. I guess print is dead.

The tech bubble was collapsing about the time Bush took office and economy had slowed dramatically before the 9/11 attacks. Clinton oversaw the “fixing” of welfare and signed-off on the repeal of Glass-Steagall. While Clinton’s not a war criminal, he was a pretty lousy president and his inability to control his sexual appetite helped usher in the wing nut era that endures today.

Odd maybe, but w has been wiping his sweaty palms on Bill’s shirt for a long time now.

Thank goodness the Shrub has your apologetic support and defense…

Essentially, you are saying that once Bush took office he could not sustain the economy handed to him, and the GOP being crazy today started when the GOP went crazy during the Clinton administration.

Sorry, not a ringing endorsement of Bush, nor a valid criticism of Clinton.

I think it’s good to focus on ex-Presidents from the respective parties have done with their time after retiring:

Carter: charity work in Africa, eliminated guinnae worm and lifelong work with Habitat for Humanity
Reagon: went home and kept to himself
Bush Sr. went home and kept to himself
Clinton: worked international business community to work with charities, set up Clinton foundation to focus on continued international charity work
Bush Jr: went home and kept to himself and painted in the bathtub

Does anyone think the Obama’s won’t pick up their community service mantle again post-Presidency and continue to do charity work with the poor or inner city youth?

I think this is one of the most insightful things Time has done in years. Whether you like it or not, the elephant (or donkey) in the room is that likely nominees of both party’s will leave us with the choice of which dynasty to vote for. Both Republicans and Democrats have been tiptoeing around that because they are both in the same boat.
