Discussion: Obama's New Personal Twitter Account Meets Wave Of Racist Tweets

Discussion for article #236665

I have 2 apps on my phone that let me know which of my relatives and acquaintances are bigots and racists.

One is Facebook, the other is Twitter

And shortly there after, those sending the tweets whined “But we’re not racists! We’re just white men with very fragile egos!”

I can’t believe anyone is surprised at this. I may be old fashioned on certain things and IMO Twitter is stupid and so is Facebook.

OR as Fox would say, these are really tweets from Liberal, making the good christian white folks look bad

After all Supreme Court has established that racism is dead. It died long ago, especially in south.

(Raises hand). Then I’m old-fashioned, too.

President Obama, Sir, I do not know how you keep such composure. My hat is off to you and Mrs. Obama.

That makes me sad.

Sad for the President, and sad for our country.

I would call that a major understatement. Twitter is flat-out toxic and its owner(s) seem perfectly ok with that. Their suspending/banning policy is a joke and they don’t have plans to make it any better (a big reason I stay off it). FB is just plain stupid – I dropped off several years ago and haven’t regretted it once.

A short note to Justice Roberts. Apparently, the post racial America you claim that exists is purely ficitional.

Which tweets were from John Roberts and Scalia?

Yeah, me too. Facebook is for stalking exes from high school.

I don’t have any I’m interested in stalking.

Anonymous and invisible carries the day among racists and haters.

I dropped FB many years ago for the same reason. Well, that plus one former classmate was forever posting every mundane little non-event in her daily non-life and another was all fucked up on Farmville or something like that. Always trying to trade her play eggs and play hay etc.

I figured that if I had not spoken to these people for over forty years there could probably be a reason to not do so for another forty or so.

As for Obama he’s one hell of a POTUS! The man has far too much character to let himself he dragged down by common pondscum and trailer trash. Same goes for Michelle. They’re two of the best examples of how to live our lives that we’ve seen in Washington D.C. since the Kennedys Carters…

And of course NONE of these Tweeters are Teabaggerrs.

Undoubtedly they expected that kind of response from a small number of the public. Not really a surprise.

Now, be honest TPM readers - if Dick Cheney opened a personal twitter account, would you tweet him? Would you say nice things? Do you think he would care what you tweet about him?

Anonymous social media appears to bring out the worst in many people. I’d be surprised if there weren’t racist commentary. I use neither facebook, nor twitter. But Mrs. Von Holst and the two daughters do. As far as I can tell from a nearby, but disinterested vantage point, it seems like a form of electronic graffiti. But, then again I prefer to use old crank-style egg beaters instead of Mrs Von Holst’s electric mixer; an appropriate choice for a cranky old geezer like me.

it would be easy for me. “I’m the President, motherfuckers, who the fuck are you?”

Yep, that section of the Voting Right Act sure should have been overturned cause everyone knows there is absolutely NO race problem in the South now,

Bring them out in the open where I can see them.

And then get the fuck out of my way.

Yes, all true. I’m on FB to reconnect with old classmates. Also trade jokes and updates with friends & family. Anyone I don’t want to talk to I block. Works for me.
