Discussion for article #245991
Good luck. McConnell has already said he won’t. but, could be a good tool to embarrass them.
I hope the fact that Mitch McConnell’s first comments were political turns out to hurt the Republicans. They might have been smarter to let there be a funeral and a subsequent nominee - and then refuse to support anyone (which is what we would have expected). Instead, Mitch gave the President the opportunity to cite the Constitution and his duties in a no-nonsense manner - thumbs up, President Obama.
He’s a CLASS ACT ! ! —
Can’t wait to hear what the clown auction has to say about… er, sorry. Republican debate. I can’t wait to hear what the republican debaters have to say about this.
You know that each and every one of them is freaking out with their handlers over what to say tonight.
Republicans want a “strict constitutionalist” to replace Scalia while denying Obama his constitutional right to nominate a justice.
Yes, agree completely.
Another excellent observation that needs to be repeated far and wide!
A “constitutionalist” is like a horse whisperer.
“Only I know what it says, and what it’s telling me is that I’m right and you’re wrong. Bow to my constitutionalist expertise while you’re at it.”
Well, since most Americans already think she’s on the Supreme Court, just make it Judge Judy.
If the moderators do their job, there should be questions about potential nominees, what might constitute an appropriate litmus test, etc - and no one but Ted Cruz has the legal background to give any kind of informed answers (although I don’t really expect knowledgeable answers from any of them on other topics either.)
President Obama’s statement was far more gracious than anything I could have ever offered (which is reason #1,978 why he’s POTUS and I’m not), and also politically astute. I do think this: in terms of pure political pragmatism, the R’s will come to regret, in particular, McConnell’s immediate partisan rebuke of the President in this situation.
Go ahead and do your thing! I stand with you!
Have things ever been this goddamn spiteful in this country before? Asking for a distressed friend.
President Obama will prevail once again, however long it takes.
Unless Obama and Clinton (I’m not worried about Sanders) denounce GOP perfidy in the strongest of terms, they absolutely will skate by without any cost. Let Obama speak in terms at least half as strident as what used to be employed by the late Mr. Scalia. Put the spurs to them Barack. Call them traitors.
Can’t find the part of the Constitution that says Supreme Court Justices can only be nominated and confirmed the first three years of each Pesident’s term.
Yes, even more spiteful and violent before the Civil War.
Exactly The nerve of these assholes. Obama is the President. He gets to appoint - fuckers
The Glee Room is adjacent to the Oval Office and that is where the president retired after he said this with the utmost respect, dignity and sympathy for the recently dearly departed.
