Discussion: Obama: 'We Should Be Ashamed' Of Failure To Address Gun Violence

Refresh my memory: how did Manchin stop the President when Manchin co-sponsored a BIPARTISAN background check bill that couldn’t pass a Republican Senate filibuster?

I thoroughly agree with you on an emotional level, but this “boil” is probably much too big and deep to lance. The crazies and the powers that pull their strings seem to really want a confrontation. I trust President Obama’s judgment in refusing to give it to them.

Then “we the people” must break the longstanding, nasty habit of not voting in off-year elections. POTUS is NOT the only elective office that counts.

Just enough Dems voted against it to kill it. I think it had just enough Republicans voting for it, that if the Democrats were unanimous, the bill would have passed the filibuster.

Of course, with the usual off-the-record games politicians play, individual Republicans and Democrats may have agreed to trade votes for “back-home” reasons.

I like what you said. First, he fights the dicks to give people access to healthcare. Then he fights the dicks so we can send our kids to school knowing they will be home for dinner. What does he have to lose at this point?

I understand your position and have held it myself.
I just don’t believe that reason has any sway with these people and the longer we wait, the worse it will get.

The amazing thing is that these votes are public record, so you are able to look this stuff up before spouting off.

Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Mark Pryor (Ark.) were the Dems that voted against it, which would have brought the total to 58 (Reid voted against it procedurally as well, for 59). This is not enough to break the filibuster.

Maybe this is a lesson to those purists that don’t vote, who hope that if it gets really, really bad, America will wake up and vote for a third party.

At least, more than the 50-51% that vote now.

You want shameful? That’s shameful

Hugely agree. You want to be hip, get some cool accessories. In politics, outcomes matter.

I know people like this couple.
They’re looking for any damned excuse to take on the government and they believe that there’s a solid bloc of Americans who will join in and stand beside them.
Of course, they believe this because 99% of the people they talk to feel the same way and that’s because these idiots tend to find each other and get caught up in self-affirming loop.
The truth is that they have no intention of starting anything but, by Gawd, they’ll they’ll be rooting from the sidelines.
It’s a perversion of patriotic ideals and they never would have been brought to this point if it weren’t validated by the pied pipers. They need to be brought up short and see consequences so they can resume their lives as basically good citizens who are susceptible to temptation and hero fantasies.

“WE” are ashamed. THEY are not.

Unfortunately, the American people, if their duly elected representatives have any say in the matter, would NOT have President Obama’s back on such a high-profile crackdown. Even many Democrats would run away from it. It would guarantee a lost Senate for Democrats in 2014, and it would most likely lose the White House for Dems in 2016 also.

What if we label guns as abortion tools??

And sell a lot more guns!

I don’t know. But out of curiosity I just looked on wikipedia where there is a list of all the school shootings that have ever occurred. It is unbelievable the way the numbers have escalated in recent years, especially since 2010 or so–all the more so since violent crime in general is way down in this country. Simply shocking.

Amen to that LGB. Nobody can say he didn’t try even knowing the pushback he would get. One thing about this President, he doesn’t put his reputation before doing what’s right.

“This is becoming the norm,” he continued about school shootings. “We should be ashamed.”

No kidding.
How many have to die? How many people … real people. It’s not some abstract number. it’s somebody’s son, daughter, mother, father, brother, sister, relative…CHILD

Will it take a member of Congress losing a child to gun violence to prompt them to do something?

Exactly correct. They never have his back. The dems are spineless on this issue and others. They are only worried about their next election - they don’t give a damn about the right thing to do. I wonder if they had the guts to just one time do the right thing - they might even be surprised to find the voters rewarding them and actually going to the polls to vote.

Indeed. I find myself numb to the stories.
