He was then forced by a manager to clock out and then unload a truck for an hour.
Before “labor” supports the Keystone, I’d hope they ask how many jobs, for how long, at what pay? And, after we refine that Canadian sludge, where will the pollutants go? Sorry, it’s not worth permanently poisoning our environment so that a few Canadians can work for a few years.
Good grief pick your battles. Wal-Mart is doing a good thing here for the environment and the planet along with other companies and it should be praised for it.
You can save tons of $$$ by leaving shit in the aisles & having 3 cashiers manning 21 registers.
And while we’re at it let’s also defend Romney for his support of a minimum wage. There are plenty of other companies the president could have praised for their efficiencies. Walmart was a poor choice.
Yes Romney’s support of the minimum wage is a good thing it may change a few Republican minds. But just like Wal-Mart’s push on solar it doesn’t excuse the rest.
walmart does have an efficient supply chain and energy footprint, however when the main part of your supply chain is searching out countries that are willing to subject their people to slave labor - its a problem. however I always said we have the uncle tom in chief, so this does not surprise me. not to mention walmart lobbying on income inequality issues that this administration multiplied by ten by its policies during the recession
Mal Wart is an efficient model of worker suppression and Chinese manufactured crap disposal. Nobody does it better.
It’s a complicated world. Great companies can do some bad things. Horrible companies can do some good things. (Just like people). It’s important to understand that you can praise the deeds of one company while simultaneously damning their misdeeds. Labor is rightly jumping on this because it’s a win for them to have another cause to raise money off of. They understand the dynamics. The President does too. It’s a fascinating tale of the tangled webs we weave.
Anyone else surprised?? He has coddled big business since the beginning.
Define “coddled” please.
Yup…Walmart is efficient…brutally so:
Oh, great. The President tries to focus on an area of common agreement with a company whose practices he disagrees with on other issues, and he gets slammed for it.
People, let’s not let liberals and Democrats get split up and divided over issues such as this. We’re already getting enough of this from the “draft Liz Warren for President” people.
“Obama Touts Wal-Mart Efficiency.”
Any business model built on slave labor, predatory pricing, and circumventing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act is bound to be efficient.
“draft Liz Warren for President” people. I like that Randy, where can I get a bumper sticker?
In all seriousness, it’s not just the president praising Walmart that bothers people, it’s that Walmart’s practices are insidious and cannot be put aside in a different category as we make room for their brutal efficiences.
One example that cannot be overlooked is the practice of paying your employees - just NOT enough - so they qualify for Medicaid. - using our tax dollars to subsidize not just the largest retailer in the world but also the largest company. They impose a real threat to having any quality of life for more than a million employees.
“Slave labor” is a bit of an overstatement, yes?
Shit like this is click bait for folks like Darcy. The President wasn’t praising Walmart for its labor practices but for making a commitment to try to save energy. But emoprogs just don’t know how to separate the two.
“China is the largest rubber boots manufacturer. They can produce 8 million every year in prison camps. General Motors automobile – the Cadillac, many parts are from prison camps. Walmart – they have so many cheap products, but many are made in forced labor camps.” – Chinese dissident Harry Wu
Darcy, the President has been forcefully calling for increasing the minimum wage, and has also taken what limited unilateral action he can with federal contractors to boost it.
However, do you not see the benefit in trying to find an area of common agreement with the largest private employer in the US? This is his way of using his bully pulpit to promote conservation and energy efficiency.
His recognition of Wal-Mart’s efforts in energy efficiency in no way implies his support for the firm’s admittedly atrocious labor practices
