Obama To Give Address 8 PM ET Sunday After Shootings
So, the shootings are scheduled for 7:00?
certainly, “Obama to give address 8PM ET Sunday, less than one week after shootings” might have avoided the ambiguity…
Anyway, everybody understands he’s “no drama Obama” but I’d much like to see him announce some concrete steps. I think he has already laid appropriate groundwork. Crossing fingers!
Surprise me Mr. President, surprise me.
A la Jeopardy. “TPM composed a more than usually clunky headline.” “What is Obama to give address after shootings?”
I have it on good authority he’s planning to come to your house, tell you a bedtime story, tuck you in and sneak away. Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise?
At least the Patriots game should be over by then. If they cut into the game for his address, Obama wouldn’t stand a chance of being reelected in New England.
As soon as I read the “on good authority” part I knew something was up.
If the president cuts in during the game and I miss the part where Brady gets injured and is done for the season - and they lose - I’m gonna be even more pissed at the president than usual. I want to see it happen in real time so I can spontaneously rejoice!
So weird. Obama has detailed a number of concrete steps, but the media only reports on poseurs like Trump saying he would deal with terrorists better, but “You don’t wanna know” how he’d go about it.
Obama doesn’t bluster, like Bush, saying he would Osama “dead or alive”–and failing to do so or saying he would “smoke out the terrorists” and failing to do so.
Obama got Osama, he got a number of leaders of Al Qaeda besides Osama, and he also got Jihadi John. He’s been “taking out” high level commanders of ISIL every other day, by reports. Gee–he’s not doing anything right??? It’s the newsmedia that loves Trump and his “You don’t wanna know” stuff.
My fear is that no matter what Obama says, his speech is going to get panned. Even if he outlines 10 discrete, well-thought out steps that would degrade Daesh over time, he won’t win over the public. A public that want a magic bullet or at least to be told that one exists.
And they’ll happily throw away Christ’s teachings, if that’s what it takes, to feel safe again.
I’m going to have to find a new way to tell you that I’m in the loop all day. all night. P.S. I’m definitely feeling unserious today.
I like the predictable part of any speech the president makes. The talking heads swoop in afterwards and tell us what he’s said, and it’s usually talkers like Todd who grabs all the time he can to tell us. Next to Matthews. My ears work just fine, thank you…
It’s time for Obama, while being careful about the issue of anti-Muslim violence in the US in general, to come clean about radicalized Muslims. In fact, almost necessary politically at this point. It’s the truth. Why not? I think so far he has been circumspect on the issue because he knows saying anything like “fundamentalist Muslim extremist terrorism” and the next thing is rednecks killing Sikhs and bombing mosques.
I can easily imagine the speech. Talk honestly. Talk about the Old Testament and Renaissance and Enlightenment in the West. Talk about fundamentalism in any religion (ha). Talk about other strains of radicalism leading people to violence like Oklahoma City and Planned Parenthood clinics.
I know, as he does, that any mention of all the violence and smiting your enemies etc. in the Bible and Christians attacking Planned Parenthood and the OKC federal building bombing etc. will be ignored or attacked by the wingnuts, and they will go beserk with the Muslim stuff. They were already apoplectic when he mentioned a little western Christian history a while back. Also when Homeland Security (?) mentioned something about the potential threat from domestic right wing groups a while back. I don’t care. It’s time for the truth from the President. Carefully phrased truth, but truth.
I expect euphemisms and sanding off all the sharp edges as he always does from Obama tonight, but I’m hoping for more.
