Discussion: Obama Thought 'Yes We Can' Was 'Too Corny,' Says Top Advisor

Discussion for article #233311

I like the slogan, don’t find it corny at all.

I’ll never forget the will.ia.m video where Obama is reciting the Yes We Can speech, and other people are saying passages along with it too. That was a great moment in the campaign. Classic.

And a winner.

The all time campaign classic was Christine O’Donnell’s “I am not a witch”.

Was well and truly the moment I knew that American politics
had crossed the Event Horizon without chance for escape.

I don’t know…I’m thinking of running for office and I was thinking I should declare that I am a witch. Then again, I live in a section of the country where witches are respected.

I guess I like corny then.

But in the end he deferred to the messaging experts like Axelrod (perhaps with an assist from FLOTUS) and went with a great slogan; yet more evidence of this president’s emotional intelligence.

Yeah and it worked

It is rather corny but that may be what makes it effective. So many things that become outrageously popular are kind of corny at bottom.

And to me, this is actually an illustration of what makes him such a rarity in politics: he just has trouble with bullsht. Bullsht arguments, bullshit soundbites, and bullsht political game-playing. On the downside, it’s sometimes kept him from being as effective as he could have been (and praise be that Michelle sided with Axelrod), but it’s a mark of integrity, one of the reasons I love the guy.

All true. Probably part of the new Obama 2.0: Fresh Out of Fucks is that he realizes the bullshitting is over. He doesn’t have to do it anymore and it’s got to be incredibly freeing.

Though.
You would be forthcoming.
Ms McDonnell was denying.

That it took a public denial?
For her to think it necessary-- in 2010?
Was one of those ‘where were you moments’ I don’t think I’ll ever forget politically.

Another difference being-- that from reading your writings these past many months?
I’d be likely to vote for you.

You were in my inbox today.

My big concern is that I have, like, no social skills whatsoever, but thank you
