Discussion: Obama SCOTUS Nom Garland Scheduled To Meet GOP Senators Next Week

It seems the R’s have created quite a monster. If the do no meet they are obstructionists, if they meet they are giving in. In both cases they lose votes. And our dear Senator Grassley is in the worst possible position. If he holds hearings and then votes no he is an obstructionist, if he does not hold hearings he is an obstructionist, if he holds hearings and votes yes he gave in to the D’s all the while his opponents can play video of his past speeches saying the senate should never play games with the appointments to the Supreme Court. What a fix they have put themselves in!

Are there any black, transgender judges lined for the job after the general election? Asking for a friend.

Other conservative groups, namely FreedomWorks, have warned that Republicans “are playing with fire” by meeting with Garland.

FreedomWorks: We only agree with portions of the constitution that agree 100% with us.

Ayotte is rapidly realizing her chances of keeping her job are slim to none so she is grasping at any straw that floats by.

They love this shit. It’s just like Fox News calling themselves fair and balanced. It’s as though they blatantly troll us.

Totally agree on that. However, I’m not too clear on how successful this gambit will be. Ayotte and Kirk can try to look sane on this but it’s only April and according to Yertle, Garland can go pound sand for all he cares. I would think this would be more successful if it were happening in October.

This is only going to get worse for the Republicans…this will be a major focus in the election, and brought up several times in the debates. Watching Trump or Cruz defend this will seriously hurt the Republicans up for election in the Senate. And they deserve it for choosing this course of action…there is no excuse for not holding meetings and hearings.

Doing your job once is a slippery slope to always having to do it.

In a month’s time (give or take) the fight will begin to move on to hearings and the same cracks will occur.

100% self-inflicted. And it is going to keep biting them in the ass at every turn.

Just say Senator Mitch McConnell, we all know who he is.

This is not the end game, it’s the opening gambit. Once they meet with Garland they can choose between the unsupportable claim that he is an unacceptable radical, the logical conclusion that the Senate should hold hearings and have a vote, or the nonsensical hedge of wait until after the elections and let a lame duck Senate vote. Regardless of which option they choose the issue remains front and center.

Or just a gay, white liberal who believes that the 2nd amendment applies to the people and not the individual and who will strike down every pro-gun law enacted over the last 50 years.

Same up here in Alaska with Murkowski facing a very strong challenger running as an Independent. The candidate, Margaret Stock, is a retired Air Force Lt. Col, graduate of Harvard Law and Kennedy School of Government and the Army War College. She taught Constitutional Law at West Point. Her forte in the military was national security/immigration. She retired but was called back to active duty after 9-11 because of her national security credentials. Lisa has switched positions four times now and has an active spokesperson on the local newspaper comments section attempting to explain away each of those flips and flops. She only won with Dem and Indy support last time and now even the native corporations are turning against her because of this obvious obstructionist behavior . The woman is in trouble and she knows it.

Does Stock have a legitimate chance to unseat Murkowski or will her father’s connections keep her in office?

So basically these senators are pissing off their base and not doing anything that would satisfy democrats or independents?

The interesting thing is that Republcians are poised to let one nomination go through to the lower court. He is Waverly Crenshaw from TN. Crenshaw was approved by both Republican senators, and I can see a scenario where they will allow votes on a couple of conservative judges, but not on judges from the left. Keep an eye open for this and call your senators to vote no.

This must put Judge Garland in an awkward spot. I am surprised he is going through with this. The Republicans have left “shame and embarrassment” in their coal cellar in the Senate basement.
