Discussion for article #246315
Oh, sure Obummer attacking a guy because heâs white and has a job.
Typical.
We just had a guy a couple of months ago randomly shooting people on I-40 very close to mine. He killed a 67 year old woman coming home from Christmas shopping in the city and another guy that was traveling with his wife.
Calling Bernie Sanders.
Whatâs your point? Iâm sure he already supports mandatory training and licensing of Uber driversâŚ
So, if I hire an Uber to take me to a Chipotle, how will IâŚ
Okay, okay, youâre right, I shouldnât make a joke about this story.
After seven and a half years, Obama is finally coming for your guns.
Most slacker President ever!
Not only that: Heâs politicizing this issue! Bobby Jindal needs to point that out.
Chris Rock gets it right again - tax the bullets.
Iâm all for gun control, but we have to recognize that sometimes all the gun control measures in the world wonât stop someone. Especially not the ones that are proposed in this country. Maybe if we had actual gun control like Australia, but background checks and more funding for mental health would not have stopped this guy. The law enforcement officers stated that there was nothing about his history or behavior that would have led them to believe he would ever do this.
On the other hand, the idea that if these people had guns they would have been more safe is equally ridiculous.
Sometimes people just do extremely horrible things to one another without warning. Not saying we shouldnât have background checks, mandatory safety training, waiting periods, the whole lot. Just saying this isnât the example to use, and the right wing crazies are just waiting to pounce.
Shattered families? Oh, just the price we pay for watering the tree of liberty. /snark
Oh, WTF am I saying? I canât even summon any gallows humor about this - these incidents are distressingly common and nothing ever gets done.
I read in Variety that Martin Scorcese is going to be directing a sequel to the story of Travis Bickle is called Uber Driver:
You textinâ to me?
Too soon?
Thatâs true, but what we really need to face is the pervasive culture of guns and violence that has poisoned American society.
Too many people with problems thinking reaching for a gun is a way to solve their issues.
First question: Did this guy obtain this weapon legally or illegally?
Second Question: Did this guy exhibit symptoms that would have made people believe he could do this?
Final Question: What the hell good would new gun legislation do?
Recognizing that we canât stop everyone, at least we can slow the buggers down by limiting their choice of weapons and making the process less convenient.
Too true â
Guns have actually become the answer to " everything that ails ya â
If so ⌠People should be required to have a prescription to get one â
â[Fill in the blank] wouldnât have stopped this guy.â
This is a fine thing to read in a good faith discussion about how to fix this. But phrased in this way, it just sounds like concern trolling version of the gun nut boilerplate question âwhat law what have stopped this particular atrocity.â People advocating for gun control already understand that there is no policy that is 100% effective, you donât need to worry about this.
I wonder how the NRA and Co. will go about justifying these killings? âOh, he was just so angry at everything going on in the world⌠and all he did was express that anger as he has every right to doâ?
Agreed. I just wish someone knew the answer. There are other countries like Canada that have tons of guns per capita, yet they donât have the problems we do.
Is it the Second Amendment (which is almost always read out of context, historically and literally)? Is it a fascination with cowboy and wild west culture? Is it fear of others? Is it predominantly gang violence related (after all mass shootings account for less than 10% of all gun deaths)? Are our police too quick to use deadly force (i.e. do they need re-training or new rules of engagement?) Maybe itâs lead in our water (not such an insane theory when you think about Flint)?
