Thanks Lee, but I don’t see an “n Replies” drop-down in discussion mode. I clicked on the Reply button, but as usual my comment is separated from yours by all the intervening comments.
The lack of thread hierarchy makes true discussions much more difficult and will probably reduce the amount of time I spend at TPM significantly. As it stands now, it’s essentially just a bunch of disconnected comments with little continuity.
I don’t know who Sterling is, whether he’s a racist, or whether the recording is really him. And I don’t have any desire to know.
On the other hand, here are some questions I do care about, that apparently aren’t being asked:
Is it right that the alleged conversation was recorded?
Is the content of that alleged private conversation any of my business?
Why was the recorded conversation seen fit to publish to the world, given all the questions above and uncertainty about its authenticity?
Why is the president commenting on something that is an allegation rather than something we know for sure to be true?
In the court of law, we presume innocence and proceed with caution to establish guilt. Why? Because we want to avoid, at almost all costs, punishing an innocent person. The court of public opinion is not the same, but it can also have devastating consequences. Will and when will it mature beyond mob mentality? If it turns out that he is a blatent racist, I won’t shed any tears for him, but I wonder who will be the next one to be dragged through the mud for something they may or may not have said in private?
Even if he didn’t say anything they would find a way to blame him for it. He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.
Good show Mr. President. I love you, Now leave Russia alone and let them have Ukraine. This is not a fight we need. The Russians love their Putin and this is what they want. Let them have it.
In his “that’s not who I am” response Sterling made it abundantly clear despite himself that the recording is authentic, hefetone. If it weren’t authentic you can bet he would have said so loud and clear. He didn’t, he just tried to weasel his way around it. So, we are not dealing with “allegations” here, you are just trying to muddy the waters.
And if someone insults me because of my race or whatever and I happen to have a recording of it, why am I not free to publish it wherever I like?
I think your main problem is right there in your first paragraph: “I don’t have any desire to know.”
That’s right, just close your eyes and America’s race problem will all go away.
Hefetone, since you have no comment history I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt yourself. But people can do this near-Cartesian doubt thing about any incident. They can also use Occam’s razor and figure that things often are actually pretty much what they appear to be. (Our sportsball owner has a history of racist stuff, for example.) It’s often telling what tool a person picks up in what situation. If you’re this cautious for everyone, then good for you. If.
bluestatedon … i absolutely detest this discussion format for just those reasons, and am already spending a lot less time on tpm because of it … i learn a lot from the discussion page as well as get a few laughs … i also like to reply and comment occasionally, but now you can’t even read the discussions and make a comment without changing pages … it’s too annoying to deal with … there was nothing wrong with disqus so i don’t get why the change was made except someone talked josh marshall into buying something not needed … and i don’t see an ‘n’ anywhere either …
I love the comment that “the media” went to every black person they could find to get a comment. Excuse me, but had a black person made the same comments about a white person, do you suppose the would have done the reverse? Of course, they would.
before Obama made that statement he should of cleared with Justice Roberts he knows about Racism in this country. Chief Justice Roberts led the high court’s five conservatives in … Racism doesn’t exist along a North-South axis as it did in 1965 thats because its moved west how about it Clive
Do we all notice that Sterling commented on the tape but never said “That isn’t me on the tape”. He said “that isn’t who I am”. If that was a denial, I missed it.
