Discussion for article #238771
I can’t believe this story has no comments
Ok. Here’s one.
I find the attitude of the Kenyan government very disappointing. They complain of a lack of US attention and money, but yet, from my reading of the article, don’t seem to have the desire to engage in even the basics of good governance.
Whether it’s endemic corruption or coldheartedness towards gay rights, I think they need a fundamental rethinking of what kind of country they want to be.
If you want someone’s money, you have to be prepared to be held to some minimal standards. But, more than that, I think they need to recognize and stand for the human dimension - an unfortunate failure in so many stories recently in the news; be it BLM, immigration policy, gun violence, or pushback to gay rights. If one is on the side of hate or narrowness of opportunity, then one is on the wrong side.
Can’t say I disagree
Weird. Normally all you have to do is say Obam… and the comments about how what he’s doing or not doing are wrong. There were articles that are doing it, expecting him to magically fix whatever issue over there is important to the author, just like people expected him to magically fix all their pet issues here when he became President.
Obama goes to Kenya and the right wing hasn’t melted down, yet. That alone is a major news story.
Obama’s trip is warranted beyond just reuniting with family, Kenya has issues that preclude them from foreign investment and from being engaged in the greater word economy. It will take a man like Obama to help them change.
Ethiopia has even bigger problems and in classic Obama style, he doesn’t go small, he tackles the biggest issues and for Kenya and Ethiopia’s sakes, they are lucky that he usually accomplishes what he sets out to do.
