Obama unites, Trump divides. Obama is Presidential, Trump is unPresidential.
It sounds nice, but Trump will just continue inciting his base to violence. His question, where are the “Trump bikers” to deal with “Antifa” at a recent rally was as clear an incitement to violence by a pol. as I have ever heard. It sounded like some of the dialogue in Mississippi Burning and it comes from the President of the United States!
There is no “hopey changie” with this fascist pig. Sounds to me like Obama is making the same mistake he did while in office: assume we are dealing with people of good will. We’re not.
Skimming, I didn’t see anything in this statement to suggest he thinks that. The only thing you can conclude is that there are people in public who don’t value “honesty, decency, compromise, and standing up for one another as Americans,” and that Obama thinks we should vote them out. I don’t think anyone as insightful or politically savvy as Obama thinks the current crop of Republicans will be nice if we hope it hard enough.
I don’t know about everyone else…but I needed to hear this. There is a part of me that was getting depressed last night. This is the message we must believe and run with…must instill in those young first time voters.
This was never going to be a sprint. The right has been constructing this shit over decades. The irony is…they are masters of playing the long game in politics…but everywhere else they are short-sighted and history will deride them. The environment…healthcare…economics. It’s all what’s in it for me in the next few months.
He’s also “unpresidented.” (as trump himself would point out.)
Several clips about this being a significant change.

Since I think I’m a person of goodwill, I assumed Pres. Obama was speaking to me, not Trump-ites. Not a mistake at all.
Meh. I remember the day after the 2008 election. I promised myself I would not say one bad word about Obama, that I was going to use a version of Reagan’s 11th Commandment, applying it to Obama.
But he is out of Office now.
Obama’s biggest mistakes included this kind of rhetoric, while not calling out those opposed to him. He took the high road. The Republicans took the low road. Obama looked great on his road, but we paid for it with missed opportunities and by his looking vulnerable. Obama never had coat tails because people like a guy who will get down in the dirt and fight. Obama refused to do this publicly, so he appeared weak.
We should NOT try to have comity with Trump. Congress should engage in an all out trial of everything. Everything. Everything. Everything, I want to see Jared and Ivanka’s under oath. I want an Emoluments subcommittee. I want a domestic terrorist subcommittee.
I want complete and utter political war, fought on the high ground of Medicare and social security, labor and environmental protections.
Maxine Waters, your up!
I love you Barack, but your hope that we unite under one creed is really far fetched at the moment. The results last night were such a mixed bag that I cannot draw one solid conclusion about this country from them except this - we do not all agree on what is best for this country and trying to pull us together ain’t working. It just ain’t.
We should NOT try to have comity with Trump. Congress should engage in an all out trial of everything. Everything. Everything. Everything, I want to see Jared and Ivanka’s under oath. I want an Emoluments subcommittee. I want a domestic terrorist subcommittee.
No one is suggesting comity but, based on the Senate results from last night, there’s some section of this country that isn’t banging the war drum as you are and they’re not looking to create our version of “Game of Thrones”. Pres. Obama isn’t speaking to you; he’s speaking to them.
Obama always makes me feel hopeful for a few minutes. But when I look at the map of the US by counties I see a massive wash of red with some urban blue dots. These people are hardened beyond reach—they will die literally thinking their fellow Americans are the enemy. The process of enlightening their children is a slow one. I’m not sure the planet is going to give us that much time.
I had hoped that America would wake up and stop this world wide movement to the right. I don’t know what made me think we would be any different than Poland, Hungary, Brazil, Italy. This isn’t just us - it’s everywhere. I don’t know what will stop it now short of another world war.
Unless and until we start giving dirt the right to vote, I encourage you to not do this. It is not instructive.
On a lighter note:
Burn it to the ground is not a strategy. The problem now and always is how do we get people to the polls. Showing them that we are just as awful as the other side is not the way to do it. It is the way to loose. Hope and change inspires people and gets them to the polls. People want to see a light at the end of the tunnel and a brighter future not a war. Clean it up to be sure, but do it with honor and with restraint. All out war will inspire no one. Win by any means will turn everyone off.
Yeah I hate being a downer and I apologize for it. We had some incredible victories last night and a lot of good things happened.
I’m just stuck in neutral here in Texas. We don’t go forward, we don’t go backward, we sit here, idling while the Nazis control the border.
Really? Because I think winning is everything at this point.
I agree. IF the House investigations and Meuller don’t change things we’re totally fucked is my feeling. It’s hard for me to accept but there are a LOT more of those MFs out there than seems possible.
Good on you, Obama
