Discussion: Obama On Cuba: 'Isolation Has Not Worked — Time For A New Approach'

I agree. I am going to miss having such a brilliant classy man with integrity representing this Country. He amazes me every day the class, cool and grace he has shown under the worst of circumstances and having to deal with republican pond scum slime and their party of ignorant racists.

I will miss him, too, and history will be kind.
Think of it: his legacy will read brought health care to millions of people, reformed banking, stabilizing and revived a sinking economy, re-asserted American influence and prestige around the world, ended torture, ended the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive war and reaffirmed the value of diplomacy, cleaned up loose nukes from dangerous spots around the world, disarmed Syria of chemical weapons, brought Iran out of the cold and re-engaged after 35 years of hostility,

And more to come.

The Republicans of his era: started two phony wars and alienated our allies, created a worldwide recession, shut down the government, promoted hatred and anti-government extremism, flirted with defaulting on the debt, defended torture, police killings, and discrimination, awarded bailouts and subsidies to Wall Street and crony capitalists, denied emergency unemployment insurance to the unemployed, refused to cooperate to revive the economy …

Yep, it’s no contest. Love this guy.

Via-a-vis Ukraine, Putin should take a cue from Obama …on this…

I shudder to think about how long it will take for supply-side economics to work.

Probably ‘never’ - just a guess.

Tinkle-down is with us forever…conservatives will dredge it up year, after year, after year, after year…as long as there is Conservatism.

The right wing will make a lot of noise about this but who cares. It’s time for a different approach.
Good decision on the Presidents part.

This man has changed so much in his 6 years in office, he will go down in history as one for the most, if not THE most transfromative presidents in history.

He was the change that America needed.

Something tells me that Mr. Obama has other gems (besides the Immigration EO, action on Cuba) he will inflict on Gooberdom in the next 18 months or so.

Agree, and I think we are finally turning the pendulum after 30-plus years of conservatism.
Despite the cynics and pessimists, Obama is winning, and his successor will only follow in his footsteps.
Giant shoes to fill.

Because Rubio comes from a Spanish speaking country, my resentment towards him is not really understandable to one not of the same background. In this sense, I understand the feelings of loathing a white racist invokes in a Caucasian not infected with that disease.

Rubio was born in Miami. So, lots of Spanish speakers yes, but he’s a native of an English speaking country. Perhaps that’s part of the reason he can be as cavalier as he’s been with this.

Elected Democrats, take note. THIS is how you win.

You don’t run, you don’t hide, you don’t backtrack. You stand and fight for what you believe in.

You go BIG and BOLD.

With this one act, President Obama has lifted the hopes of millions of Cuban people, defused tensions and advanced prospects for greater cooperation in the Western hemisphere, further isolated our opponents, and raised the stature of the United States one more notch.

And along with his actions on immigration and China emissions, the President has taken away the momentum from the Republicans after you so cowardly allowed yourselves to be defeated, just like he did after your disastrous performance in the previous midterms.

Once again, Obama is advancing after his party’s self-inflicted defeat, and the Republicans find themselves on their heels.

After six years, have you finally realized that you have something to learn from the most successful Democrat in a generation?

Good news for Koch Industrys, which owns Georgia-Pacific, maker of Scott brand products. I wonder how soon Sheldon Adelson will have a new casino built in Havana?

The same can be said about our 35-years non-relationship with Iran and the nearly 70-years non-recognition of Palestinian rights to a homeland. Hopefully, Obama can also rectify those mistakes of foreign policy.

Consider this. Elian Gonzalez would not have had to board a leaky raft with his mother to escape Cuba, losing her in the process, setting off a political firestorm between these countries as to where he belonged. Don’t know if they could have legally immigrated but they certainly wouldn’t have needed the raft to bring them here…

While I applaud his actions, I do note that President Obama is over a full month into his “official” lame-duckery. To paraphrase the Bard, elections make cowards of us all.

Thank you, littlegirlblue, for the nice words and your candor!
