Sad day, and I have no doubt that there will be a very bad case of buyers remorse.
Old, white voters were sold a pack of lies by Right wing newspapers and people like Borris Johnson trying to advance their personal ambition. They have no real plan, and the consequences will be enormous.
The most immediate impact of this (other than a bad recession and job losses) is going to be to turn the UK into âEnglandâ and with Scotland gone, the remaining âEnglandâ will become a more hard right Tory country.
Cameron of course is primarily responsible for destroying the UK, but Corbyn is also at fault for not getting involved earlier. It was Labor voters who put âleaveâ over the top, but the end result of this (Scotland leaving) ends the chance of a Labor government.
Only question I have is if the buyers remorse is strong enough on this, as people wake up to the costs, that England does not go through with this, since it is after all only a ânon-bindingâ referendum, not a binding out come. Brexit requires Parliament to act.
So England goes Kansas on us?
Itâs been hard to separate any wheat from the chaff of ridiculous memes from both sides but itâs fairly apparent that the brits have voted themselves into doing something for which they have not a clue of the eventual outcome.
We need to make damn certain that something like this does not happen in November.
Meanwhile we can observe and learn from what happened yesterday and hope that it does not lead to additional hard right turns back to nineteen thirties Europe.
Lower and middle class people are suffering and theyâre desperate. I see this as a cry of rage at the global elite and the politicians who are birthed by that class.
As Brexit doesnât help the very people who voted for it, theyâre basically saying theyâre fed up and willing to sink the global economyâŚbecause any way they look at itâŚthey lose. No options for success as they see it.
Were they âreallyâ suffering? I donât think people REMEMBER 2008 and the near collapse of the world economy. Bitching has become the norm. NOTHING is ever âgood enoughâ. NO ONE is âresponsibleâ. I am not some entitled, wealthy snob. I am middle class. I was laid off during the recession. I networked, went back to school, buckled down, got a job, paid my bills, kept my house, sent my kids thru college. It was tough but suffer? I donât think so.
In America, anything is possible with hard work, good for you and your family!
This basically proves what a bad idea referendums can be, especially on a complex matter with so many ramifications like this one. It boils down to the emotion of the moment. I wonder if that horrible shooting didnât cause some people to think âLetâs just give them what they want so this wonât happen again?â
I donât follow UK politics that closely, but I really donât quite understand why Cameron agreed to it in the first place - it will go down as one of the truly terrible decisions in history.
At the very least, a major, complex decision like this should have required a 60 percent vote, not just a simple majority, and he could also have insisted that at least three of the four constituent âcountriesâ of the UK agree.
True dat, +1000000
Because simpletons always have simple solutions to any matter and damn the (not clearly understood and always misrepresented) consequences.
I was very glad that Scotland voted to stay in the UK, but I think Iâm changing my position on that.
Screw the damned English!
Itâs not hyperbole to say this could be the beginning of the end of the United Kingdom. I really donât think they thought this through.
This is just another example of the 65+ crowd trying to return the West to fascism before they die, though⌠sigh.
Not all of us.
Great to hear about your turnaround. Congratulations.
Unfortunately, some people do not have the strength of character, grit, or presence of mind to think through personal crises and act to overcome them, and they become vulnerable to demagogues who foist simplistic, dumbed-down proposals as the only viable solution to complex problems.
Good luck to you and yours. All the best.
I actually think the parallels are very direct. The âleaveâ side said that the Europeans would roll-over and give the UK a much better deal (âI will negotiate great dealsâ), and that the UK would save 350M pounds a day they were giving Europe (âMexicans are ripping us offâ) and that the economy would take off without European Regulations weighting them down (âyou are going to get tired of winningâ) and that old industries like steel and coal would come back ("Iâm going to end the war on coalâ) and that this would protect the UK from Emigrents (âIâll build a beautiful wallâ) and keep out Syrian terrorists, let in by the Europeans (âBan all Muslims nowâ)
The entire deal was sold via one sided news by right wing British newspapers who convinced their readers that the Europeans would roll over and a golden age would arrive if only they would get rid of the government holding them back (Fox/Pill poppân fatty anyone?)
The âRemainâ side painted a picture that was very negative, but IMHO very correct on the consequences. It was a fantasy/racist campaign on one side and a negative (as in bad things will happen if you vote this way) on the other.
The parallels with Trump are clear, down to having the Labor Leader Corbyn not really getting off the fence and opposing Brexit, and inform his voters of the very negative impacts (sanders anyone?)
Please keep your chauvinism reined in, it is nauseatingâŚ
Yes, the parallels are chilling.
I am (and Iâm part Scottish, but a long way backâŚ) 100% in agreement. I thought the Scots would be crazy to leave, they stayed, and now the Nutty English just blew up the UK.
The risks to Scotland outside of the UK were large, mostly as England would have blackballed them in the EU, which made clear they would not help out separatists. Well now the shoe is on the other foot, and Scotland will do better in a larger EU than in an England that has turned its back on the world and will now be loosing many of its biggest industries.
In fact Edinburgh has a good chance to siphon off many of the good jobs that will be leaving England for Germany and Ireland, provided they can guarantee access to the EU quickly by leaving.
Whatever do you mean??
Xenoâ Oldeâ England throws a damned hissy fit, and everyone loses money! They are, at this moment, the Ted Cruz of Europe.
Oh for fu*kâs sake! They have suffered enough, and will quickly suffer moreâŚBUT this is too much:
