Congratulations to Justice-Designate Garland.
Let’s get him confirmed quickly.

Hmmmmmm…so what?
If the Senate is still held by the GOP they will definitely refuse any Supreme Court nominee who isn’t a young wild-eyed Republican. From Day 1 of Obama’s Presidency they have gotten away with stuff that no one thought they could have, and most definitely shouldn’t have, because they have no accountability. Their sheep keep voting for them regardless of how the GOP makes them suffer.
“The people have spoken,” will be re-interpreted as: Congress is majority GOP so we have a responsibility to keep the court in conservative hands.
Unless we get downstream voting for Dems, the obstruction will continue and metastasize.
As best I can tell, it’s now officially deemed tantamount to eating babies.
WHAMMO!! Obama quotes Hatch verbatim from his first nomination debate!
That’s GOTTA hurt.
Riki-Tiki-Tavi, according to the headline. But the poor thing appears to have died shortly after becoming the first mongoose ever nominated and then replaced by Judge Merrick.
What is really crappy is that Supreme Court Justices (like Scalia) collect PLENTY in in-kind stuff. I don’t know if they are allowed to actually charge speaking fees (which I think they should not) but the effect is the same anyway. They present at seminars at resorts all over the world, and between the sumptuous digs, travel and per diems, they do just fine finanacially.
As to the President, I have utmost confidence that he will be an effective and admirable ex-President, no matter what he chooses to do.
Or until the Republicans lose control of the Senate.
Sounds like a fine choice! Now Republicans can explain to the American people why a sitting federal judge on the second highest court in the land doesn’t merit good faith consideration. (And the fact that he clerked for the late Supreme Court Justice William Brennan is a double plus in my book… Brennan was, in my opinion, one of the truly great
Supreme Court justices in this country’s history!)
Maybe not. Are we sure Garland wouldn’t be re-nominated by President Clinton? For that matter, are we 100% sure that the Senate Republicans, as Trump’s epic defeat to Hillary looms, won’t come to their senses and say “Garland is the best we can hope for in 2017”?
Journalism trivia: The TKTKTK in the headline for the discussion page has to do with an old journamalism convention of putting TK in where something is “to come.” It’s a way for editors to let compositors start putting the newspaper page together while waiting for the last bits of late-breaking news. They use “K” instead of “C” because these little messages are deliberately misspelled as a signal it’s not meant to run. The words “lede” and “graf” for “lead” and “paragraph” are based on the same idea. You don’t see these things in the end product if people go to the trouble of PROOFREADING EVERY NOW AND AGAIN but hey it’s free, right?
TK’s both the Democratic and Republican nominee for Pres, AND and a SCOTUS Nom. Scintillating!
TK’s a goddamn dictator and I demand an American Spring!
‘would actually allow themselves to be used…’ Uh yeah Johnny…totally tongue-in-cheek or elsewhere?
It just makes me crazy. This are the last months of this man’s presidency and if anyone here doesn’t think Obama knows exactly what he’s doing is beyond me.
Think of all the money it saves on fact checkers and editors!
Amen to that. If anyone believes Obama will just be on the speaking circuit, knows nothing about this President. He will be even a greater ex-President than he was President and that is saying something.
They won’t permit the discussion to be framed in that fashion. They’ll limit it to “The next President deserves to be the one that shapes the court for years to come, not one leaving office in a few months.” That’ll be the extent of their response to this nomination. Anything more extends the debate and runs the risk of lending credence to Democrat insistence on advise, consent and vote.
Awe…but it’s much more fun to poke TPM a little–even if person-to-be-named-later (PTBNL–a close relative to TK) gets his knickers in a twist when we do.
Too bad it’s damn near a YEAR and not ‘a few months’…
