Republican leaders in Congress have faulted Obama’s steps on loan repayments for failing to address the root cause: college costs that are too high.
And the moment he tries to do anything to address this issue, Republicans will howl that it’s Socialist, anti-Christian, proves Democrats are the real racists, and it’s part of the real War on Women.
I saw his speech today and he was excellent, going off script to point out that wealthy people pay less than students. I was very proud, but saddened to see that his speech, this legislation, and the Executive Order got very little play in the left wing or left-leaning media. This happens quite often and is why so many people continue to falsely believe Obama never pushed for a public option and never really tried to close Gitmo.

My Lord you are beyond stupid. You are of course referring to legislation developed by Elizabeth Warren which would of course tax the wealthy to pay for refinancing college loans. In addition, allowing students to refinance will deprive the banks holding the original loans to make a killing off the original higher rates. please try thinking.

This one struck me as especially egregious given that the far left is constantly lamenting Obama’s perceived lack of liberal policies. He signs onto and promotes an Elizabeth Warren created student loan plan and it’s silence or complaints. Some of them really are just as batshit and hateful as the far right.

Bankruptcy is not an option for student borrowers. Corporations, no problem.
Out of the nearly 40 million borrowers, about seven million have defaulted on these student debts resulting in their credit being ruined and additionally adding penalties of 25% till the debt is repaid. Like that’s going to happen.
60 percent of employers run credit checks on applicants before hiring or promoting, making it close to impossible for millions to get a higher paying job to actually repay these debts.
Since 1999, student debt has increased more than 500 percent. since 2000, the average salary for young people has decreased by 10 percent.
The Department of Education flags colleges who’s previous students are presently behind on their payments from releasing transcripts to potential employers who are interviewing these very students.
If you default on your student loans, you can be stripped of your professional license. In 2011, 42 nurses in Tennessee had their nursing licenses suspended for defaulting on their student loans. .
Private student loans can be transferred to family members once the borrower is deceased.
Student loan debt has also been cited as a major reason why millennials have delayed car purchases and even starting families.
The Federal Government would be the most profitable company in the world if private, having made about $50 Billion + on student loans in 2013. This is even more than Exxon Mobil.
