Discussion: Obama Heads To Texas With No Plans To Visit Border

Discussion for article #224825

Is this President capable of not screwing-up just about everything he touches? He should be forced to go see the mess he himself has created with his pen and phone, watch the grief he has created to a lot of South American children. Maybe some busloads of these children should be redirected to Washington DC, destination White House, and let Obama house these kids in his own space. Letā€™s see how quick that border get closed and sealed.

Have we stopped appending anything and everything with ā€˜gateā€™ and started to Katrinize all political debate?

Heā€™s a screw up or a mastermind at cover-ups. Which is it?

No, they should be sent to the home of George W. Bush, who signed into law the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 which prevents the Border Patrol from making a deportation decision but requires that these children be turned over to HHS until their immigration status is decided.
You are one ignorant twit.

Visiting the border is useless symbolism. Letā€™s do something humane, letā€™s do something useful; find some way to let the kids stay; find some way to give the kids homes. Weā€™ve done all sorts of other massive complicated things in the past as as a nation, but weā€™ve forgotten how to be noble. Apparently the only thing weā€™re good at any more as a nation is mass shootings and increasing the prison population.

Agreed. Is it somehow necessary to understand the problem? Hard to imagine. And ā€œsealing the border,ā€ perhaps with the famously suggested alligator-filled moat, is a fantasy. As long as thereā€™s poverty and violence south of a very long border with a very rich country and work to be found north of it, there will be people trying, often successfully, to enter, legally or not. One characteristic of RWNJ stupidity is the belief that all problems are simply, quickly, and easily fixable. Theyā€™re not. Thatā€™s what makes them problems, fer chrissakes.

Exactly correct. If he went to the Border the repukes would accuse him of a photo op. He can do nothing visiting the border. Why donā€™t those congress critters who are so critical go to the border. It appears we are protecting our borders just fine since we caught these people. Perhaps that fucking Mexico should do something.

Gov Perry and racists trolls,
If the following shows how much Texas taxpayers dollars are being spent on the border, whereā€™s the money going if the border is still unsecure/

ā€œA lot more of your tax dollars have been used in just the last few years to keep Texans safe by working to secure the border.
The Texas Legislature passes budgets every two years.
Between 2008 and 2009, $110 million were spent on border security. Since then, funding has more than tripled. This year and next more than $330 million will be spent by the Texas Department of Public Safety along the border.ā€

We all agree that visiting the border is useless but last night Chris Matthews spent 10 minutes whining that Obama hadnā€™t rushed to the border and that this was going to become his Katrina. I wish we didnā€™t have to put up with ignorant cable twits who once worked for somebody important, but I guess that is the cross we carry as Americans these days.

Donā€™t get me started about ignorant cable twits and other media fools, or the public that puts up with it. If a broad market for insightful, nuanced reportage and commentary suddenly appeared weā€™d have it in about three weeks. But we donā€™t want it, mostly; itā€™s a niche market. We need it, but we havenā€™t evolved to where we want it. We want twerking. So thatā€™s what weā€™ve got.

The GOTP conspired with the drug cartels to cause this border/immigration problem to make President Obama look bad. Thatā€™s my tin-foil-hat conspiracy theory & Iā€™m sticking to it.

A blast from the past, Mattin:

I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set
when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a
book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss
sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that
set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will
observe is a vast wasteland. -Newton Minnow, 1961

The only time Chris Matthews is not whining is when heā€™s slavering and drooling over how Tip Oā€™Neil and the Gipper saved the known universe for all that is sacred and holy. If insight and perspicacity corresponded to viable neuronal cell bodies, the poor man would be brain dead.

If Obama doesnā€™t want to visit the border, he could come to Phoenix and greet the immigrants as they are dropped off at the Greyhound Bus station. Or, go to one of the many new detention centers across the country.

Ask bin Laden.

If Repubs want something done about the border, they should fund security for it as asked. And vote on an immigration bill while theyā€™re at it instead of playing politics with childrenā€™s lives.

America is a very popular place, thatā€™s for sure. People come here for the security. Make long perilous trips, in fact, through deserts during the mean days of summer because America is so worth it.
We will do the right thing which unfortunately for these immigrants likely means returning them to their country of origin.

America is good to everybody for the most part. The worst of us, AKA teabagging Republicans, hate on everything but we shouldnā€™t let that seem representative of America. Racism and hatred exist and shout the loudest but it is the least of us, also in fact.

Iā€™ve read the ā€œGilliganā€™s Islandā€ writers named the unfortunate shipwrecked vessel ā€œThe Minnowā€ as a rebuke to Minow for saying that. Sort of like our local trolls, they ended up mostly disproving their own point and proving his. Lifeā€™s little ironies, you know?

Baloney. This ā€˜messā€™ was created by legislation signed by George W. Bush, in 2008 that mandated children crossing the border illegally be treated entirely differently from adults. There is a legal process for this. And the influx of children dates from 2011ā€“a year before Obama helped out the Dreamers
