Discussion: Obama: 'Have No Doubt' I Will Act On Immigration If Congress Won't

Discussion for article #226997

The Teabaggers won’t like that one bit! How DARE he actually try to govern!

After all, “the President is NEAR!” [NO, consarn-dadbladdit!]

The other day I was worrying that the president acting alone with EOs could hurt Dem candidates in red states. Some poster, who is clearly smarter than I’ll ever be, pointed out that it would give those red state Dems something on which to run against President Obama. The more I think about it the more I realize how true that is and how much of a boost that could be for someone like Grimes in KY or Nunn in GA.

Plus, executive action on immigration could also drive out the Latino vote. They, like black folks, are far more likely to stay home in midterms, but this is something that could boost enthusiasm and get them to go vote. I think the same will happen with black folks and anger over police brutality/murders.

We need asses in seats in the Senate and House. If candidates have to adopt some GOP rhetoric it’s perfectly fine by me. With apologies to Oleta Adams: I don’t care how you get there, just get there.

I fully, agree Plucky: an EO shows the President to be bold, forceful and willing to step forward to solve problems – alone, if need be.
I’m not going with the pants-wetters fearing a GOP backlash: they’re always ready to carp and pounce. We cannot be afraid of them, and many will credit Obama for trying to act during this stalemate.
Actually, I think Obama is boxing the Republicans in: bitch about unilateral action? What should he do since Congress refuses to act - especially since the GOP got almost everything they wanted in a Senate bill that passed with bipartisan support ONE WHOLE YEAR AGO.

Oh Plucky, I doubt anyone has much on you smart-wise. I read that conversation too and thought it was a really good perspective that I hadn’t thought of either.

This will be a disaster, and will lose the senate for the Dems. There are many Dems like me who do not support illegals and the amnesty for criminals. I will stay home.

Actually, it’s not a criminal offense, but a civil one, so “criminal” might not be accurate.
Also, it’s not “amnesty” either, since, under the bill passed by the Senate last year, there would be fines and penalties involved during the long process to full citizenship, which would take 13 years, and only to those without a criminal record.
“Amnesty” implies a quick, instant, painless process.

GOPs are boxing themselves in with their rhetoric too. They are walking right into the punch.

We’ll be fine without your vote and the “many Dems” like you. LOL!

President Obama will have to issue an executive order to reform “law enforcement” because the police hates undocumented workers and their kids just like black people. Go out Mr.President in a blaze of glory the GOP is going to impeach you no matter how you cut it.

I believe President Obama is poking the republicans to try to get them to continue their shutdown talk. That won’t work out well for them.

I too am thinking of staying home if he lets all the illegal immigrants stay. I want Congress to act and deliberate on this, not use some executive order that is far too generous. I do not like the bill they tried to pass because, for one thing, I think it is unworkable and allows too many to stay.
The biggest favor this country could do itself is to end birthright citizenship, a major draw for illegal immigrants & end chain immigration. Plus, if they plan to let some people stay they should zero in on people who have shown an interest in assimilating such as those who have paid taxes for a number of years and those who have served honorably in our military for a minimum of two years. This argument that we can’t separate families is nonsense. Deport the entire family with a “right of return” at age 21 without the benefit of chain immigration for any of their children who have birthright citizenship.
I will never understand why people think those who came illegally have a right to stay.

Intolerant of those who disagree with you.

Laughing at silly posters’ silly posts.

We still have a few concern trolls in TPM comments.
