Discussion: Obama: GOP Argument That Voters Should Decide SCOTUS Is 'Puzzling'

The only Trumpian weak-minds of current note belong to punditry or White Nationalists but, regarding your assuming power legally aspect, there’s a lot of money out there effin’ with heads in new, sly ways like this morning’s seemingly pro Trump candidate’s tax plan ‘analysis’…
PS I doubt televised Garland hearings would be “tangential”.

Keep on, keeping on, Mr. President!

So, effing what we give them ammunition? You act like they’re going to behave differently. What will they do – block the President’s Supreme Court nomination? Oh, wait . . .

Just watched the interview with Ms. Totenberg. While I haven’t always agreed with President Obama, this is a powerful reminder of just how much I’m really, really, really going to miss him. Simply listening to his careful use of the English language is a delight. 'Nuff said.

And, lest we forget: Screw you, Senator McConnell!

What Obama needs to do is to tell the senate leader that when Hillary is elected he will pull Garland’s name and use the excuse “She has the right to pick her judge” and watch the clusterf*ck that is the gop. They will be like rats in a cage chewing on each other.

Yeah like that will make any difference.

It was always difficult to watch Tweety…but in this era of Trump, it is impossible.

I thought they already were…but, it could always get better.

Actually, that is not their argument at all. And I think that it is well past time to actually take their argument and run with it. Everyone seems to be forgetting that the selection of a Justice is a 2-step process. First, the President appoints, and then the Senate confirms. The Republicans now want to turn that into a referendum. But let’s get them down firm on “the people should decide” because if Hillary or Bernie announce who they would appoint, and then are elected, then we should have a new Justice. At that point any Republican opposition would be contrary to “the people should decide.” The people would have decided, and we waited for them to decide. The “people” cannot replace the President but not the senate.

The American people decided who they wanted to appoint Scourt justices not just for four years but eight. That’s a pretty long term commitment to ignore without there being ramifications at the ballot box in November for the Republican Senators who obstruct the Garland nomination.

I guess conservatives are so into the short term because they fear Trump is going to take over from where the TeaParty started to erode their power. He’s not they only problem.

These Republicans forget that those who voted for Obama will continue to vote for Democrats in the future as demographics change even more. Their actions are making it even easier to vote progressive…all the way down the ticket.

The troll is strong in this one.

Actually, he seems to be having far too much fun right now circling before the kill. I mean he actually seems to be have a good time with this and Trump. And man that makes me feel so good to see him relaxed and confident. He is very successfully sending the message that they are not getting to him in the least, and his occasional jabs have not yet failed to land right where he wanted them. He is running the show, and he wants them to know it. And then to pull it off with such grace and aplomb. What was he doing with those reader boards all these years?

Right now, he is the embodiment of one of my favorite Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes: “Win as if you were used to it, lose as if you enjoyed it for a change.” Just wish he had started this 5 years ago.

actually… it’s very similar to today’s ‘modern CEO’ who pursues short term profits for a company instead of a long term strategy for growing capital and profits…

he gets rich on the stock and cashes out… probably why Republicans think a ‘businessman’ can run the country…

It’s like using great fishing bait only to learn the fish have gone to your car looking for cigarettes…

“Puzzling” is the new code word for bullshit.

That’s perfect. Sometimes I get frustrated with no drama Obama, but they just walk right in every time.

Even better than “perplexing” (which would have had too much flourish),… :sunglasses:

McConnell reminds me of a Good Old Boy NCO who met us when I was called into military service and who decided to talk “official” for us before he started yelling. He distributed to us a particular form and said:

“Do not make no marks on this paper!”
