Discussion: Obama: Chelsea Manning Commutation Was 'Entirely Appropriate'

yup.

“President Barack Obama said at his final press conference on Wednesday that ‘it made sense to commute’ Chelsea Manning’s sentence…”

If for no other reason, just to watch Republicans twitch every time he used the pronouns “she” and “her”.

The “she” and “her” part I agree with, but otherwise this is one of the very few instances where I disagree with Mr Obama.

Logic and compassion. Two words that will be not be in use for the next 4 years.

Petraeus got no time; most leakers get 3 years yet Manning received 35. It seems appropriate to commute, and humane.

I’m of the opinion that status should not affect a sentence. Equality before the law and all that. But that’s just me and my one opinion doesn’t count for much. If a whistle stopper stands up for a principle and takes the sentence there’s a certain dignity yet it was classified material Manning stole and sent to wikileaks. And she had taken an oath as a military officer to not do such. Had Petraeus served time to what Manning has up to this commutation I would be satisfied I suppose.
