Discussion: Obama Called Trump Early Wed. Morning, Will Make Statement Later In Day

Oh sure, now they realize it.

nailinali yes I trust those Obama approval numbers. But let me explain something to you as you mention 2018 (the map is not good) unless Trump is a disaster in 2 years. Maybe. Anyway I like this analogy: In the 2001 Band Of Brother’s miniseries about Easy Company in WW2. A soldier is soo scared he will not fire his weapon in combat. A LT tells him his problem is he has HOPE. AS they are on the front lines during D-Day. The LT tells the private he cannot do his job with that hope. So he must accept the fact he is dead. He is already dead. Then he can go about doing the job he is trained to do since he is already dead.

My analogy is the Democrat party is dead right now for the next 2 years. So go on about your daily life. Ignore Trump. I am a cord cutter myself. No cable news. Just ignore Trump…Expect he will make stupid policies and come back in 2018 and try and support Democrats running for congress.

No they don’t. And that is agonizing. I will never, ever, forgive them. But my anger doesn’t change anything about them.

In hindsight let’s be real Hillary was a lousy candidate, Her life with Bill. It was a pact for him and her to someday be President. She had her shot in 2008 and likely would have won in 2008. The Clinton’s backed Obama in 2008 and 2012 and I think their was a sense of obligation to support Hillary in 2016. Bernie Sander’s younger supporters don’t get that loyalty.

Hillary lacked stump charisma which she acknowledged. Alot of sexism against her too. I actually think Elizabeth Warren screwed up not running. I think Biden would have won. Just all the factors played into Trumps hands. Hopefully in 4 years we can get Trump out. His diehard supporter’s do have a scary cult feel about them.

Not sure that’s true. Trump tapped into something we simply did not know was there.

I knew it was there. It’s called White racist hilljack gonna take my guns attitude. This was revenge against this country electing a black man twice. These people came out of the woodwork to vote for Trump. Listen I don’t get it. But I work with a guy who used to live down in Louisiana . He told me they are still fighting the civil war in some parts of the south. THAT’s what Trump tapped into.

Man, Barack and Michelle worked their asses off for Hillary.

How could we let them down like this?
[/quote]Let me point out the obvious: they’re wealthy and can flee Trump’s FBI easily.

Think of all the Hispanics, Arabs, Somalis, Syrians, and other brown folks who are about to go through I Shall Bear Witness.

But the old guard of the South did not elect Trump. The Midwest did. True that IN is as South as ya can get, but some of the others? All the pre-polling AND exit-polling was wrong. And Dems run data driven campaigns for better or–in this case–worse. (edited to correct shaky hands)

red Hillary let those people down by not doing a better job running her campaign. In 2012 after Obama’s poor 1st debate. He realized he let people down who were counting on him and apologized. Oh and I guess debates in Presidential elections don’t really matter.

I do think Obama has class and manners—a welcome change from the previous guy.

But damn, he’s such a DINO. He will be pushing hard for the TPP in these final days, and sadly it will pass.

I’m still furious at him for his betrayal on the telecom immunity bill, his failure to do a thing to close Guantanamo, his attacks on Edward Snowden, his relentless prosecution of CIA whistleblowers like John Kirakou and Thomas Drake, and his hypocrisy on marijuana laws.

True but it was white rural voters which was really my point. As I said I live in Indiana which went for Trump by 20 points. I am in Indianapolis which goes bluer every election. Indiana is a rural state. Northern Indiana is basically a suburb of Chicago. Indy is the biggest city in Indiana and I saw few Trump signs. My brother lives In Atlanta, Georgia and he says Atlanta very Dem city while the State is Red.

Ultimately I think that’s exactly what this was. Angry, sacred white people afraid of the changing demographics of this nation.

They’re pissed that we put a Black Man in the White House and now they want to make America White again.

This won’t last. The country is still becoming less white. Alot of these Trump voters will be dead in 8 years. I always find it amusing when a voter is like 83 years old and tells a reporter they are voting for so and so candidate because they worry about the future of the country. You are going to be dead soon. Just saying…

There was the meme of Obama saying “I got this”. Well he doesn’t now, and it’s terrifying. But all I can do is go to work, try to be the best man that I can be for the people who depend on me, and not let the dissapointment and anger get the better of me. And disconnect totally from most news sources. And continue to vote, for as long as that is still allowed.

That’s what I am doing. I will just ignore Trump. I work for a media company so it’s hard to ignore Trump. But I will try and do it.

I know. How could we do this!? Sigh.

Joseph think about this: Hillary lost to Donald Trump. Obama a black man with a muslim name won 2 elections against these same Republican’s hating on him. Against 2 better qualified candidates. That in itself says all you need to know about what kind of Presidential candidate Obama was… I doubt Obama would not have lost to Trump. He is a better campaigner and would have ran a better campaign.

In relative terms, we all are going to be dead soon. As a white, older, but liberal guy, I too worry about my country. And I worry that liberals will attack each other rather than work to change this awful result. There are many reasons for this defeat, but we owe it ourselves to avoid lashing out at like-minded people and instead learn from this what-the-fuck-just-happened moment.

I am writing this after no sleep last night. I just couldn’t stop imagining what had been unthinkable but which is now all too real. But please be kind to each other. We will need to be even more united if we have any chance of surviving the awfulness that is, well, you know. Peace.

I’m pretty much done with MSNBC. I’ll start watching old Law & Order episodes while I cook dinner. The way they constantly attacked Clinton for fucking deleting emails or using a private server (just like the Bush administration) without ever putting anything in context is reprehensible. Their false equivalency is atrocious. They normalized hate, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and brutality. I sincerely hope he makes good on his promises to go after the media. Chuck Todd in stripes sounds pretty good right about now.

Treating the fascist as a legit presidential candidate and pretending as if this was a normal election is their colossal collective failure. And this is how democracy can die. As a minority woman, I fear about the future of the country. Some journos, as individuals, kept doing the right thing. But their work that could have killed any presidential candidacy under normal circumstances was buried by the MSM’s structural quest for ratings. This shouldn’t have happened, but here we are. Along with MSNBC, all the other cable networks, The NY Times, AP – they collectively fail the Republic.
