Discussion: Obama Authorizes US Military To Send Up To 1,500 More Troops To Iraq

Discussion for article #229949

Republican response: Yes on the troops.
No on the funding – just take it out of the waste, fraud, and inefficiencies you’ve enabled with your lawless administration.

Obama is every bit the nightmare that is dubya and dick. The planet, & WE the PEOPLE do not deserve the existence of them. These are the worst humanity has to offer, and he / they are the president! The country has fallen so far that I no longer recognize it as once being a decent place to live.

Since Bush spent $20 billion training and equipping the Iraqi military that turned and ran from Mosul, the Iraqis ought to pay.

Am I the only person who thinks that this makes Obama look weak and fickle? Like he’s doing this just because he took such a big hit in the election three days earlier.

Getting a jump on the GOP war mandate. You know the one where it is unAmerican to not have a war going on at all times, no matter where, no matter why, just so their friends in munition manufacturing can still make big bucks. Oh yes then there are the private contractors.

The Bootless War, Chapter 4.

I’m gonna use that. You got a problem with that?

What a week. This pres could take the whole Dem party down. But it won’t happen as the totally dysfunctional opposition - although focused and flush with victory - will fuck it all up. Who knows.

Not in the least!

Despite all the frowny Democratic faces in public, I have a feeling when the doors get closed in certain Quiet Rooms, the elation at the return to “gettin things done” for the .01% is running pretty high. No more pesky Progressives in the way - it’s full speed ahead for the TPP, Keystone, and Gawd Knows What Else.

To Iraq, the Middle East, whatever. It’s one giant borderless goatfuck over there these days and Iraq is as central as anyplace to work on the ISIL, Al Qaeda, terrorist issues.
Iraq has turned into the everlasting gobstopper of wars, as per Cheney and puppet Bush’s plan. Problem is, Dick/George never got their precious oil and by the time that they ever get another plan together, we will be energy independent. Then the Middle East will really despise us eh.

And since we have private contractors doing the militaries job and we are always policing the world, we need to start leasing our forces on a per current conflict basis. New surge = new conflict=new contract. Cost plus 50% sounds about right. Or, we can just bring all of our boys and girls home and let them self destruct, which is the best plan that I can think of.

I think I saw this movie when I was a teenager in the 1960s. Like all those bad, old movies, it comes up for a revival every 15 years or so. I can tell you how it ends.

I am strongly anti-war and was opposed firmly to both Bushes’ adventures in Iraq.

I have no problem with this action by the president.

Why not?

For one thing, his strategy appears to be working. ISIL is, according the NYT, stymied right now, and they haven’t been able to advance one bit since Obama stepped in.

Secondly, not only did he get a Sunni coalition together to oppose ISIL, apparently now both the Saudis and the Egyptians (who both birthed extremism) are joining to combat extremism. That is a major development.

For another thing, Obama laid the groundwork in advance for reshaping the (rightful) resentment of the central government by the Sunnis by getting Al-Maliki to step down and create a better form of governance.

I know, I know. Libertarians and far lefties all despise government and hope that it will fail at everything it does.

But Obama’s strategies are working; I say let him keep going. After all, who wants ISIL in charge anywhere?

I’m glad to see you’re optimistic, delusionally optimistic but … whatever. And the other four or five sovereign nations we’re indiscriminately bombing, what’s your plan there?

What a profoundly idiotic comment.

What bullshit.

I know, drone attacks don’t count as a ‘bombing’. I just can’t keep up with you.

Libertarians may hate Big Gummint, but to claim that leftists do is historically ignorant.

It was a good move giving soldiers hovercrafts so there would be no boots on the ground. Best surge ever!

You go to war with the boots you don’t have on the ground not the boots you wish weren’t on the ground. Or something like that.
