Interestingly, no journalist has ever been charged under the Espionage Act for publishing classified material. The reason is quite simple. No prosecution would stand up to a court challenge on First Amendment grounds. Courts have regularly held that the First Amendment means that the government cannot put prior restraints on what the press can or cannot publish. And that’s an end to it.
