Discussion: NYT Reporter Glenn Thrush Suspended Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Baseball has struggled trying to decide how to handle the players from the steroid era. Most or all are considered effectively ineligible for the Hall of Fame. Some great players are shunned, unable to stay in the game through coaching or scouting. Their commercial endorsement possibilities are limited. But many people wonder whether they were a product of “their times” and some forgiveness or slack is due.
Currently an entire generation of men are being outed and called to account for sexual misdeeds, crimes and general thuggery, Horrible crimes and behaviors. Their shunning and loss of jobs and prestige well deserved. I wonder how many years pass, as happened in baseball, where people start to think “You know, just wiping away an entire generation of people in all these fields isn’t the one size fits all way to handle all this.”
Maybe it is the way to handle it all. Purge the lot of them, fire them all, slam the door if they come knocking for anything at all. Forgiveness? Sure, but you’re still fired, now get out. Therapy? Sure, fine, here’s some money or a referral to a shrink, but we still don’t want your kind around here, go away. What do we do with two or three generations of living men that just don’t, or didn’t, get it?

You’re asking for an unemployment rate of about 40% if every man who’s made unwanted advances gets canned.

this whole thing is way out of hand.

Product of their times? This has been steadily going on since Myles Standish.

True. And a society that decides behaviors that have been around for 500 years had better stop, now, today, immediately, and everyone alive that engaged in them is getting paid a visit from the Four Horsemen, has a wrenching era to cope with.

Thrush is physically unprepossessing, and often looks like he just smelled a hen’s ass.

OTOH he’s a pretty big shot in the organization, pressuring colleagues with less pull. It’s problematic and you can’t blame them for trying to address it. The search for love is pretty fraught at best but I do see some issues in what I’m reading here.

Thrush said he has “resumed counseling and will soon begin out-patient treatment for alcoholism.”

“I am working hard to repair the damage I have done,” he said.

Just wearing a hat inside “Like a real reporter” should give him prison for life…

Misconduct? Caught with his tongue in the President’s ass?

I think there are a lot more than 40% who have made unwanted sexual advances. How are you going to make the wanted sexual advance if you don’t try?!

Woman here telling you how. Wait for her to signal to you. It may never come so move on. Also, it would help the pursuer if he had the looks, talent and charm of George Clooney, Javier Bardem and Clive Owen.

That certainly can lead to misunderstandings. The thing is, if she indicates (verbally or otherwise) that she doesn’t want it, then it’s immediately time to stop. Also, if she has given no indication that she wants it, then it should not begin in the first place. In many of the accounts coming out now, one or both of these points seem to have been missed.

That’s the question confounding me right now. What’s sexual harassment and what’s foreplay?

It can be hard to interpret these things, but I think the mind-set you describe can take care of a lot of it.

You notice that the talented accomplished men I named have never and will probably never in the future be accused of “sexual misconduct.” They don’t need to go where they’re not wanted. Too many women saying “me, me, me” maybe. Hahaha

@pluckyinky Getting silly for a moment but Woody Allen, another guy with dubious morals who wants us to leave Weinstein alone, has described foreplay as 20 minutes of begging.

Indeed, these pursuits would be more trivial and less remarkable had they not involved colleagues. Regarding any search for love in the workplace, it is of importance to remember …

What a debate we will be having.
