Discussion: NYT: McGahn Suggested To Porter That He Resign In November

Porter: "Resign? Hell, I am up for a promotion. No way am I resigning!"

“White House Counsel Don McGahn suggested to Rob Porter in November that he resign from his position as staff secretary after Porter’s ex-girlfriend contacted McGahn about Porter’s behavior, the New York Times reported Tuesday night, citing people familiar with the discussion.”

Those “people familiar with the discussion” would be Don (“I know a sinking ship when I see one”) McGahn.

McGahn did not follow up on his suggestion to the since-ousted staff secretary, according to the New York Times.

Very good lawyers operating at the highest levels of government can get a bit busy. Certainly so much there are items that fall between the cracks. I mean, it's not as if there's some app on your phone you can just quickly make note of a reminder, or even a secretary or aide you can ask to remember it for you. This is 2018 after all.

Did he also suggest Porter seek help for his problem?

citing people familiar with the discussion.

Oh, I’m sure the “people” were familiar with it. Listen, Don, you’d know better than me whether having your heart in the right place, or at least being able to portray yourself as issuing a hesitantly worded warning every now and then, is any kind of legal defense when you’re in it as deep as you are. But if I were you I’d be interested in arranging some way of getting out of the situation with my continued freedom guaranteed. My own little warning there, free of charge.

As I read this I article - I thought, “most transparent source of leaking, ever.”

Wondering how advanced McGahn in his exit planning from the WH.

I’ll bet Trump told Porter that beating one’s wife was no reason to resign. it sounds exactly like something that motherfucker would do.

There’s a transcript of him talking to Howard Stern (I think) where he comes very close to saying that.
He said that if you treat your wife like a queen, you are making a big mistake. Change your tune and you’ll see how she changes her behavior.

This is about the worst possibility for McGahn, isn’t it? It proves he was fully aware of the problem (which we all knew already, but this provides solid evidence), yet his response was to gently suggest to Porter that he might consider the possibility of resigning? And then to drop the issue entirely without following up in any way.

I’ll be honest, I’m going to be disappointed unless Porter, Kelly, McGahn, and Hicks all go down over this. We’re 1 for 4 so far…

A lot of people in Teflon Don’s circle thought they could get away with stuff because shit slides off him, so, by extension it should slide off them too.

However, a lot of people in Telfon Don’s circle are finding out that when crap hits, it may slide off Donnie, but it lands on the people below, double deep.

And if they’ve already gone their own shitstorm going, well, the shit gets pretty deep pretty fast.

Congress needs to investigate security cleance procedures. Sanders claims the White House Personnel Security Office receives the background reports on WH personnel, and they complete the investigatory process once it’s passed off to them from the FBI. Does this mean the intel is not forwarded in any way to the WH until essentially a second review is completed by the White House Personnel Security Office? That seems to be Sanders’ assertion. The White House Personnel Security Office didn’t tell the WH of Porter’s troubles, because they weren’t sure the allegations were true? And to be fair to Porter more review was needed? What level of alleged criminality would be allowed before the White House Personnel Security Office broke with protocol and spoke to the WH? If the FBI told them Porter was a suspected Russian spy would they say “Well, thanks for your investigation, we’ll just let him roam around the Oval Office while we look further into that.”?
For that seems to be what Sanders’ is saying happened when the White House Personnel Security Office was told of domestic violence allegations. Just what the hell triggers a hair on fire, this person needs removed, now!! type of response?

I’m wondering how much he’ll squeal when he is put before a Grand Jury under oath. Attorney client privilege aside , he knows where all the skeletons are buried and I suspect would be willing to give some of them up to avoid jail time

Now, McGahn should resign, as he obviously has not done his job.

If anyone deserves to get shivved, it’s Totally-Not-Racist General John Kelly. I want him locked in a room with all of the women Trump sexually harassed, and I want the women provided with brass knuckles and cattle prods.

Yet Sarah Huckabee Sanders will cling to her lectern and her lies again as the earnest “reporters” seek a new and improved parsing of her dump truck of fables, satisfied with her stern warnings of “already having told you people”, and “as I’ve previously stated!” as useful and compelling facts!

The WHCA, frankly, should be dissolved. When the White House lies without being called on it, or suffers no damage when those lies are laid bare, then there’s no use in disseminating their lies for free.
