Discussion: NYT: Defense Sec. Carter Used Personal Email Account

Discussion for article #243881

How about something more with this beyond it being a Republican press release? Maybe some mention that this was a common practice in the Bush Administration? No? Is TPM being pulled farther to right into the sunset? Don’t go, Shane!

Yeah but did he pull a Ted Cruz and give away classified information on national tv?

Oh holy CRAP! Everyone KNOWS (well Republicans…) that government servers are much more secure than private technology!!! AND that it’s only OBAMAITES that have something to hide that use private email!!! Guess we can’t ‘talk’ about anyone else that does it…

TPM: Seriously, what is wrong with your ‘Comments’ buttons? Too many of your stories won’t allow folks to comment.

I remember back before the Clinton years, when the “and this is a bad thing because . . ?.” question had to have a clear and obvious answer before the New York Times would cover it as a “scandal.” Sadly, it now seems the opposite is true: the existence of an obvious answer to the question means a story is deemed non-newsworthy. (Like, say, the Downing Street Memo revelations that the Bush Administration faked the case for the Iraq War. Anyone remember when the NYT failed to cover that because they said everybody already knew it?)

The furor over this is not really about security. It’s about transparency, or the perception of transparency. Stories like this and the Hillary Clinton email “scandal” play into the narrative that Democrats, and the Obama Administration specifically, are hiding things from the American people.

Whether or not that is true in reality, or whether Sec. Carter only used personal email for routine administrative things and backed it up to his official account, doesn’t matter. Once a narrative, especially one that reinforces many voters’ preconceived notions, is established, it is very hard to repudiate.

So?

Who really cares about which email server was used? Well, besides the gop/bags and their “media” minions…

Well, I’m off to do other things. Too many technical problems with TPM this morning.

Was wondering why I couldn’t post on most articles here this morning. Thought it was my computer. Thanks for confirming its not just me.

Using personal e-mail has become so common as to be a nonstory at this point. This actually helps Hillary’s case.

It could be you. Are you using a personal email server!?!?!?!?!?

Probably not. He was interviewed and said it was mostly administrative stuff sent via an iPhone. No classified stuff and nothing of National Security interest. But the facts don’t matter. What this really is doesn’t matter. What it can be made out to be does.

Well you commented and I am commenting on your comment after I clicked on the comments button.

Some of the newer articles didn’t allow posts up until a few minutes ago though. That’s what BeattyCat is referring to.

Did he do anything illegal?

I disagree with your position here. I commented once or twice on the Clinton email “scandal” specifically because I have a network security background and many of the allegations floating around where that the server was insecure. That’s why they kept calling it the server in her basement.

If you’ve forgotten about that aspect I’m sure you can see a little of it by looking at my comment history.

EDIT: to fix grammar failure, must remember to proofread

Republicans do that every debate to get a leg up and sound more knowledgeable and then no blowback comes of the disclosure because that would be “political”.
