Discussion for article #231400
The killings on Saturday dramatically escalated tensions
that have simmered for months over the deaths of young black men.
…dramatically escalated tensions…
Which might have been avoided-- or at the least minimized–
had two District Attorneys not whitewashed Grand Jury proceedings–
to thus allow the indictments and ensuing trials
of the police officers who killed unarmed men.
That’s all that had to happen
to perhaps positively and proactively change
the present social climate.

Generally, those fighting for civil rights
don’t shoot their girlfriend on the way…
Kevin Drum over at Mother Jones on blaming Bill de Blasio, Sharpton, and Obama for the assassination of two NYC policemen:
Fair enough. But I assume this means we can blame Bill O’Reilly for his 28 episodes of invective against “Tiller the Baby Killer” that eventually ended in the murder of Wichita abortion provider George Tiller by anti-abortion activist Scott Roeder. We can blame conservative talk radio for fueling the anti-government hysteria that led Timothy McVeigh to bomb a federal building in Oklahoma City. We can blame the relentless xenophobia of Fox News for the bombing of an Islamic Center in Joplin or the massacre of Sikh worshippers by a white supremacist in Wisconsin. We can blame the NRA for the mass shootings in Newtown and Aurora. We can blame Republicans for stoking the anti-IRS paranoia that prompted Andrew Joseph Stack to crash a private plane into an IRS building in Austin, killing two people. We can blame the Christian Right for the anti-gay paranoia that led the Westboro Baptist Church to picket the funeral of Matthew Snyder, a US Marine killed in Iraq, with signs that carried their signature “God Hates Fags” slogan. We can blame Sean Hannity for his repeated support of Cliven Bundy’s “range war” against the BLM, which eventually motivated Jerad and Amanda Miller to kill five people in Las Vegas after participating in the Bundy standoff and declaring, “If they’re going to come bring violence to us, well, if that’s the language they want to speak, we’ll learn it.” And, of course, we can blame Rudy Giuliani and the entire conservative movement for their virtually unanimous indifference to the state-sanctioned police killings of black suspects over minor offenses in Ferguson and Staten Island, which apparently motivated the murder of the New York police officers on Saturday.

And generally those that protect and serve don’t indiscriminately murder the unarmed in the street.
Tell us…since this man gave full explanation and warning of what he was intending to do and WHY…
exactly WHERE in this does he mention that he’s “fighting for civil rights?”
I’m surprised Kevin left out blaming Sarah Palin for the shooting of Gabby Giffords and the death of six other people in Tuscon. Perhaps he didn’t want a visit from Bristol.
Tom Lehrer- National Brotherhood Week.
During National Brotherhood Week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood — this year, for example, on the first day of the week, Malcolm X was killed, which gives you an idea of how effective the whole thing is.
I’m sure we all agree that we ought to love one another, and I know there are people in the world who do not love their fellow human beings — and I hate people like that!
Introduction to “National Brotherhood Week”
Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,
And the black folks hate the white folks;
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule.
“National Brotherhood Week”
Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,
And the rich folks hate the poor folks.
All of my folks hate all of your folks,
It’s American as apple pie.
“National Brotherhood Week”
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can’t stand,
You can tolerate him if you try!
“National Brotherhood Week”
Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews.
“National Brotherhood Week”
It’s only for a week so have no fear!/
Be grateful that it doesn’t last all year!
“National Brotherhood Week”, closing stanza
"a memo from an NYPD chief asked officers to avoid fanning rage within the ranks by limiting comments “via all venues” except when talking out one’s backside en masse should the majority elected mayor be in attendance.
Condolences to the families and friends.
“…at least 19 arrests…”
Just don’t step on his right to own and lug around military-grade weapons. Not my rule. Ask the conservatives to explain it.
Dream on. Right wingers never apologize no matter how disgusting or perverted their actions. They double down. Conservatives have one agenda and that’s to dehumanize people they disagree with. They don’t want to argue or discuss. They mock, lie, and insult with every breath for the sole purpose of improving their position by degrading the very persons of liberals.
Don’t pretend we haven’t seen this before. I won’t mention where because I’m afraid Godwin will be invoked, but I think you know what I’m talking about. Conservatives dream of a world where they can do as they please even as their opponents are forced to shut up.
He also missed the truly big one:
Blaming GW Bush and Dick Cheney for inspiring thousands and thousands of terrorists to hate us for what we are and to do whatever they can to kill us.
Which bring to mind a comment I made 15 days ago or so on another story.
Someday soon the cops will become the real victims because of no talent procecuters and the system. Then it will finally be settled the right way. As it stands now, they are to protected, to above the law and have reached the point that they do not protect and serve the population. They are protecting themselves through the chain of command and that never works out well at the end of the story. Unfortunatly there are good cops who know the difference and will be dragged into the mud pit with the ego maniacs who seriuosly believe they are unstoppable, untouchable and way above the law.
Change is coming and I hope for the good before hunting season opens on those who think they are indestructable.
Unfortunatly, it has begun.
Should we be surprised that the more authoritarian among them would encourage all of them to show the same side of themselves that’s been on display to young black residents of NYC since Guiliani was elected mayor?
What’s up with Rudy, anyway? He’s got no chance of ever being elected again to any high public office, and his security consultancy and associated businesses have been realized for the scams they are. Does he now seek to parlay his notoriety into a late-life career as a paid and sponsored propaganadist?
Even pariahs have to make a living.
Obviously the killings of Eric Garner and Michael Brown had nothing to do with Brinsley’s shooting his ex-girlfriend in Baltimore, which supports your theory, Plucky. In that context it’s kind of hard to see Brinsley as anything but a suicidal opportunist. Social media pronouncements about righteous vigilantism tend to lose all credibility when the shooting spree starts with a former lover.
Those not familiar with the source may think that comment to be harsh or judgmental or possibly racist in origin. I and others here know it’s from the heart and spot-on. Not only that, but it needs to be said out in the open. This is not a reflection of the collective Black community, but is the product of the unbalanced mind of one individual. The risk now at hand is for the racist elements in the media to paint this terribly tragic act of one highly disturbed individual as an accurate representation of the current state of the African American zeitgeist, in order to create and escalate their heavily biased racist narrative. We all need to push back where we can.
There was demagoguery against Dr. Tiller by Bill O’Reilly.
There wasn’t demagoguery against cops by President Obama or Mayor de Blasio.
The comparison isn’t “fair enough.”
But it remained unclear Sunday whether he had any involvement in the protest movement.
Sounds like somebody is trying to make a case for shooting protesters
It was his last move other than killing himself in life. That he wanted in audience doesn’t seem all that odd to me.
