Discussion for article #230432
When people are constantly told to fear a group of people they tend to overreact to the least little thing. When police are taught to fear a specific group of people, individuals in that group end up beaten or dead.
Maybe we need to start teaching our cops not to be so scared.
There is absolutely no excuse for bloodying someone, and possibly giving them a concussion, for a $2.50 fare. That is so much worse, a thousand times worse, that a mugger taking your wallet. I have been mugged three times in my 40 years in NYC, and only one of them matched this incident for unnecessary violence. The other two were as polite as high tea in Windsor Castle compared to this savage cop.
That’s just fucked up. Fire. His. Ass. Now.
Arrest his ass now.
He should be fired and arrested for assault.
How is it that I already knew the “young man” was black?
NYPD Black & Blue transitions from “Broken Windows” policing to broken bones.
“I feared for my life” has become the standard excuse for violent cops when they get caught and it seems to work for them. If Darren Wilson gets off, it will be because of that explanation.
Of course, the police report will clearly state that, because of the suspect’s persistent resistance - jeopardizing the safety and welfare of the arresting officer and surrounding civilians , the suspect had to be forcibly subdued and then transported to a holding cell.
So is the cop.
I bet he’s already gotten job offers from Ferguson MO PD and from Joe Arpaio .
The GZS -GeorgeZimmermanSyndrome . Citizens/LEOs hoping a less than white person(s) scare them so they can say “I feared for my life”
Frankly, worse than being beat (longterm) is a 20 year old having four charges, 2 of them possible felonies, for jumping a damn turnstile.
This is insane and sucks.
Police have been doing stuff like this since the beginning of time, or at least since police officers were invented.
At least this guy 1) didn’t get shot, and 2) actually committed a crime.
Violence on camera never looks good, but honestly, by the standards of normal police behavior this hardly qualifies as brutality. THE POLICE BEAT PEOPLE ALL THE TIME. The question is was the officer’s response equal to the threat posed by the suspect.
^This I agree with. Is the law regarding turnstile jumping just and proportionate? He already got a beating over it. To have a felony follow you from age 20 on, over jumping a turnstile, is too much.
No, a beating is too much. Period.
The felony charges are just insanity.
Except that, to a certain extent, it’s true. These cops (and in general the White population of the US) have been trained to fear Black men…they really do feel that their lives are in danger.
It shouldn’t be any more of an excuse though than the “gay panic” defense, though, and is stupid, but that’s part of the problem, isn’t it?
I dunno, sorry, but we don’t know what was going on before and he never went down and allowed handcuffing. This is much more grey than the text would have me believe. Also, we can hardly call this racial, the cop is black too!
Looks a lot like assault to me.
The camera is mightier than the pen!
