Discussion: NYC Officials Say They're Not Seeking Other Suspects In Chelsea Blast

of course setting a bomb off in NY city is an “act of terror” DeBlasio never fails to state the obvious

A very effective display of Mr. Obama’s shift to a law enforcement approach and a slap in the face to Trump’s fear mongering and self-centered imaginary solutions.

I sure hope it wasn’t Trump who offered the $10,000.00 reward. It would never get paid.

Wow, that was one well planned, yugely extensive ISIS terror operation .

Injuries: 29 people with (thankfully) minor injuries, all out of the hospital

Fatalities: One (1) Dumpster.

It’s okay, RWNJ’s, you can come out of your backyard bunkers now, and change your undies…

I am really proud of all of the law enforcement involved. It is obvious that there were multiple agencies involved. The co-ordination and co-operation between these groups is phenomenal. That doesn’t happen without extensive planning and practice, which is essential in dealing with terrorism. They weren’t acting on the emotions in their guts and preconceived beliefs or some kind of impulsive actions.

I really want to stress how important the co-operation is. We had some major fires in San Diego some years ago where none of the multiple fire agencies and local officials had a working relationship for such situations. It was 3 days before someone decided to be the spokesperson and be responsible to inform the public. Even the different fire jurisdictions couldn’t communicate with each other because their communications equipment was not compatible. They have worked on those issues and whenever there is a fire now, everyone knows who does what. It took a lot of work and swallowing some pride, but the different agencies work together and train together for such events now. It makes a huge difference in lives and property saved as well as how much fear people experience. I saw that same planning and co-operation unfolding in New York this weekend.

Trump is the antithesis of this kind of planning and execution. I don’t think Trump has much experience working with groups of people. He doesn’t even work well with his own campaign team. I don’t think he as any practice or skills in being part of something that takes co-ordination, practice and teamwork, not to mention the ability to listen, evaluate and respond. Trump draws conclusions from his gut and acts impulsively. I’d rather rely on professional law enforcement than Trump’s gut, any day.

Damn. I’ve got a scene to rewrite in my romantic-comedy script.

So my question for you is this – what is an act of terror? / If it is “obvious” just by the act, without more, that is an act of terror, then what is the point of the word that distinguishes an “act of terror” from ordinary violent crime. Of course, any lynching, murder, violent assault, arson, drunk driving, and so forth would necessarily be acts of terror as well… you see, there needs to be some definition that is meaningful to distinguish one from the other.

This is pure speculation, but I’m guessing these were just guys whose numbers were in the address book of one of the cell phones Rahami used. They probably don’t have any relation to the bombing except to identify Rahami.

So cool to watch St Cloud police chief shoot down Fox & Friends co-host’s race baiting in a very classy way:

I am a St.Cloud native. I now live 20 minutes away. I still shop there weekly.

An act of terror is intended to cause, well, terror. It’s first and foremost a spectacle. It’s less important that it be actually harmful to many people, though presumably fatal acts of terror are more terrifying than those which do less harm. It is generally random, so any murder that targets a specific person would not be an act of terror. Ditto murders carried out in private. On the other hand a lynching where the body is left on display would, I think, be appropriately termed an act of terror–though perhaps less so to those who do not feel like they are in the demographic targeted by the lynching. Drunk driving might be terrifying but it’s not generally not intended to be. Is this meaningful? Not particularly. It’s language that we grasped onto around 9/11 to try to bring order out of chaos and it didn’t work out so well. Indeed, it made your random violent malcontent more powerful because they were no longer mere criminals, now they are “terrorists.” It’s time for everyone to go back to being criminals. And for us to put the harm done by these acts in some sort of perspective. However, for a people who all think we each have a meaningful chance of winning the lottery, this will be very, very, hard.
