To be fair, if it wasn’t going to be used for law enforcement purposes, it would be a really good data point for researchers to have. Could be very useful in all manner of things, like directing where more public assistance might be required, studies of the impact of immigration on resourcing of public schools, etc.

Well, naturally. Need to pinpoint it, for those whom they can remotely validate as citizens, no need to waste the effort (although, to be thorough, really should go door-to-door, don’t know who might be hiding Jews immigrants).
I understand that it has been obvious for decades that too many Republicans have no problem with cheating to win, but they’ve been caught. And, they don’t care that it is obvious. Am I reading this wrong?
Oh, not saying at all that it should be in there. As a former analyst, though, I can almost taste how good that extra data point in the set would be for all sorts of analysis.
Really is a pity that political reality means that it’s likely never going to be an acceptable piece of data to get ahold of.

At this point the Trump administration has achieved its goal. Between its threats of deportation of “millions” and the concentration camps it has set up on the border, anyone who is undocumented or has an undocumented friend or relative living with them will decide as a matter of self-preservation to go deep underground and not to respond to any governmental inquiry.
So, the undercount will occur. The only benefit of leaving the citizenship question off would be to preclude the states from districting based on voting age citizen population rather than full population.
Actually, they’re not in a bind at all. Or, to put it another way, they’re only in a bind if they have corrupt intent…which everyone has pretty well presumed.
That’s why their approval ratings are at record lows and many Americans no longer consider them as impartial arbiters of the law.
