Discussion: NY Post: Trump 'Badly Missed The Mark' With Lukewarm Charlottesville Response

As Josh says in his editor’s blog, it is likely that Trump will soon read some anti-Nazi statement through gritted teeth. I am already bracing myself for the sighs of relief following that moment–and the inevitable declarations that Trump has now become president.

Trump’s waiting for an evening, Tiki-lit backdrop for his remarks.

I’m somewhat shocked Rupert let this one through…maybe he’s too busy playing footsie with Jerry Hall to care? Still a weak response, but as it’s the Post, I’ll take it. ā€œMany sides,ā€ my ass…

Wow are the Faux News KKKomment boards in rare form today…WOW.

The editorial board said the President shouldn’t have a difficult time summoning ā€œa few Trumpian terms like ā€˜losers’ and ā€˜really, really bad people’ to describe the hundreds of neo-Nazis, Klansmen, white supremacists and the like who descended on the college town — not after one of them has killed an innocent.ā€

Timid Trump can’t find his words. Won’t call them what they are - BAD NAZIS. Weak (or sick)!

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Donnie’s dog-whistle was pitch perfect, for his Nazi/KKK/Alt-right base.

Any particular link you can provide? I’d prefer not to have to wander around FUX News.

Hehe…here’s one, although I would suggest first just taking in the apologist angle they’ve taken by looking at the front page and the articles and headline wording as a whole.

ā€œBadly missed the markā€
Meaning it’s a branding problem.(snicker) Murdoch’s minions realize that there’s some minimal relation to obvious reality required to make propaganda effective(read Shep Smith and sometimes Chris Wallace).
It’ll really be a riot if as suggested above trump doesn’t
#cave
to the pressure and go all teeth-clenched.
Either way, he’s toast.

Murdoch:ā€œI hate amateursā€

Yep. It’s always hard to see what’s what. And when people don’t really want to know, it’s that much harder to make them see it. But honestly things are changing, especially since this weekend. I think people are seeing, even some who didn’t want to, that Trump is what they accused Obama of being: a person whose values are alien from those of the society he claims to want to lead. There may not be much talk anymore of pivots and so forth. The illusion is getting too hard to maintain. But I’m sure the NYT has a long thumbsucker in the works right now about how cozy former leaders have been with Nazis and what about Wernher von Braun and so forth. Generally, though, I think the supertanker is turning toward reality a bit.

Well, that’s two minutes of my life I won’t ever get back…

But thanks for the laughs therein…

This is what I see too. The problem for Murdoch &co is entirely with the optics. Not that trump should be doing anything differently, just that he should be disguising his tolerance for murderous racists so that public outrage doesn’t get in the way of enacting the right wing agenda.

I can’t go to those sites. The comments horrify me. I can only imagine.

It’s not called a ā€œmissā€ if your intention was not to hit it. Trump can’t give a broad condemnation of Nazism, fascism or White Supremacy. I’m not sure I’m in with Josh Marshall in thinking Trump is one of them but he needs them. Nothing offends Trump unless it’s aim is to attack Trump. Killing people in the street of Charlottesville is mox nix to him. But the killer is a part of his shrinking base and that’s where Trump comes in. He cannot risk losing the support of the Alt Right. If he does he’ll destroy his future in politics and probably the Political Right in America too. If the Alt Right is made to feel unwelcome by Trump they’ll take their movement elsewhere and fragment the GOP. Most GOP’ers do not agree with the Alt Right but they need them. That’s why you see Trump tip toeing thru the tulips when it comes to the subject.

There’s an enormous opportunity for the Democrats in this. It’s so solid they’re going to have to outdo themselves to fuck it up.

With a side order of ā€œHere’s how it’s done Mr. President. I think we’ve accomplished something in this session.ā€
ā€œAccording to my records your retainer is exhausted. We’ll need another hundred to continue to help. I’d like to put you on paygo myself, and I’m going to ask the board later. Meanwhile when can we expect the payment?ā€

And when DJT thru gritted teeth and clinched jaw reads a prepared statement today, they’ll hail him and take credit.

Now would sure be a great time for the Access Hollywood ā€œN-wordā€ tape of Trump to be released.

Speaking of missing the mark I’m hearing gun loving co-workers bitch and moan about a new NC law on the way getting rid of having to have training and lowering the age of concealed carry. One even said ā€œit’s gong to become the wild westā€! I thought that was what they wanted? Also bitching that folks that do training will go out of business. Oh the motha’ fuckin’ irony! Complaining that no mental disorder check and one guy says he better by as many as he can because he has some conditions that might be considered a disorder. Oh the irony!
