Being a whipping boy would imply trumped up charges. A false assassination report that resulted in a hugely expensive multi-state manhunt, and could have gotten someone killed, is no false charge. He SHOULD go to jail for it.
Just like the lady who tried to set up her hubby with the ricin sent to Obama. They nailed her with USPS Metadata, that was great.

Wow. Ths was no-spur-of-the-moment crime of passion. He planned it, bought a burner phone and implemented a plan to get rid of the evidence. Then he lied to federal agents. Twice.
Five years would be getting off easy.
